In raids that use World of Warcraft’s modern, difficulty-specific lockout system, you can run Normal and Heroic in the same weekly reset, and each difficulty has its own chance at loot. Legacy raids can work differently, so the answer depends on the specific raid and version.
How Normal and Heroic lockouts work in modern-style raids
Blizzard’s 2014 Warlords of Draenor: Dungeons and Raids overview described Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic, and Mythic as having separate lockouts. Under that system, clearing a boss on Normal does not use up your Heroic loot chance for the same boss that week.
This is a description of the modern-style system, not a guarantee that every raid from every expansion follows it. For a particular older raid, check its own rules rather than assuming the current-style answer applies.
Does doing Normal lock you out of Heroic loot?
For raids with separate difficulty lockouts, no. Each difficulty has a separate weekly loot eligibility, so a Normal kill does not by itself prevent a Heroic loot award. Blizzard-hosted community guidance also distinguishes killing a boss from being eligible for loot: in the loot-based system it describes, a boss may be killed again, but loot eligibility for that boss and difficulty is limited to once per week per character. Read the lockout warning and confirm the rules for your raid version.

Why legacy raids may give a different answer
Some older raids use a shared weekly loot restriction across difficulties, according to Blizzard-hosted forum guidance from 2025. That guidance names Firelands and Siege of Orgrimmar as exceptions to the pattern it describes, and also notes that Timewalking can have additional lockouts. Because the guidance is not a comprehensive official rules list for every legacy raid and version, treat those examples as a reason to check the exact raid—not as a universal rule for all older content.
Check before joining a partially cleared raid
Difficulty rules are only part of the picture. Joining a group whose raid is already in progress can affect the progress lockout associated with that instance. If the game displays a lockout warning when you enter, read it carefully before accepting; do not confirm until you understand which saved progress you may join.

What to confirm for your raid
- Raid and expansion: “Normal and Heroic” alone is not enough to establish the rule for every era.
- What you mean by “do”: Being able to kill a boss again and being eligible for another loot award are separate questions.
- Group progress: Check any in-game warning before entering an instance that has already been cleared in part.
