You can use commands to build a village-like settlement, copy or load buildings, and summon villagers. The exact method depends on whether you play Java or Bedrock and which game version you have. A settlement you build is not automatically the same as a generated village or guaranteed to have all of its mechanics.
What do you mean by “make a village”?
There are three distinct goals: build the visible houses, paths, and farms; create a settlement and populate it with villagers; or place a generated village structure. Commands can help with each part, but the available commands differ by edition and version, and the results are not interchangeable.
- Build the layout: Use block commands to place, fill, or copy parts of the terrain and buildings.
- Repeat buildings: In Bedrock, save a structure and load copies at chosen locations.
- Add villagers: Use
/summonto create entities, with entity-specific syntax depending on the edition and version. - Place a supported structure: Use the relevant
/placecommand only when your edition and version support it and you know the appropriate structure or template identifier.
Enable commands before you start
Minecraft commands are entered in chat with a leading slash, and you need the appropriate permissions. Minecraft’s official command guide explains command access in both editions.
- Bedrock single-player: Enable Allow Cheats in the world settings. Minecraft warns that enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world, even if you later turn cheats off.
- Java single-player: Enable Allow Commands. Multiplayer players need the permissions granted by the server.
Build or copy the village with commands
Use block commands for a custom layout
For a hand-designed settlement, the official Bedrock command reference describes three useful tools: /setblock places one block, /fill fills a region with blocks, and /clone copies an area. Together, they can help construct walls, paths, floors, or repeated sections. Exact syntax and supported options may vary by version; consult the in-game command suggestions or the documentation for your edition.

Save and load buildings in Bedrock
Bedrock has a documented workflow for saving a building as a structure and loading it elsewhere. Microsoft Learn’s Structure Blocks and the Structure Command Tutorial demonstrates saving a cabin, loading it, and placing copies nearby to form a village-like arrangement. The tutorial describes using structure blocks and /structure to create a village layout.
- Use a structure block to define and save a building, following the tutorial’s steps for the current Bedrock interface.
- Choose a destination for the saved structure and use
/structure loadto place it there. - Load additional copies at nearby coordinates, then add paths, farms, or other buildings to suit your layout.
The command supports optional placement and animation parameters. Refer to the tutorial for its syntax and check it against your current game build before entering a command; do not assume every option behaves identically across versions.

Can you place a whole village with one command?
There is no single cross-edition command established here that reliably places a complete generated village by name. The /place family has edition- and version-specific support: Bedrock 1.21.80 release notes say /place structure and /place jigsaw left the Data-Driven Jigsaw Structures experiment, while Java 1.21.5 release notes describe /place template and changes to place-related syntax.
These release notes do not establish that one village identifier or command works everywhere. Check autocomplete and the documentation for the exact edition and version you are playing: Bedrock 1.21.80 release notes and Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes.
Add villagers, but keep the mechanics distinction in mind
Minecraft’s official command guide documents /summon for creating an entity. It can be part of populating a settlement, but the exact entity syntax and arguments depend on your edition and version. Use the command suggestions available in your game for the precise form.
Visible buildings and villagers do not, by themselves, establish that a custom settlement has every system associated with a generated village. The official village feature discusses generated villages; the Bedrock structure tutorial demonstrates making a village-like arrangement from saved buildings. Do not assume that placing houses or summoning villagers reproduces every village behavior.
