To get one, hunt drowned that spawn carrying tridents or look for tridents among trial chamber loot. The odds of a drowned carrying—and then dropping—a trident differ between Java and Bedrock Editions.
Can you craft a trident in Minecraft?
No. The Minecraft Wiki’s trident reference lists no crafting recipe, so there are no materials to combine at a crafting table. Tridents must be obtained in the game world instead.
How to get a trident
Defeat drowned carrying tridents
Drowned are the main documented source, but only some spawn holding a trident, and a holder may not drop it when killed. Minecraft’s official Taking Inventory: Trident article, published January 30, 2020, describes drowned as the source. Its statement that this is the only way to get a trident predates the trial-chamber route listed in the game reference, so it is not a complete current acquisition list.
The Minecraft Wiki reports different probabilities for Java and Bedrock Edition. These are reference figures; the consulted page result did not establish a game version or page revision date, so treat them as estimates rather than verified odds for your current version.

These are separate chances: first a drowned must spawn with a trident, then it must drop the item when killed by a player. The figures do not establish a guaranteed result or a current-version combined chance.
Check trial chamber loot
The Minecraft Wiki also lists trial chamber loot as an acquisition route. The available reference does not establish how its likelihood or effort compares with hunting drowned, so there is no supported basis for ranking the two methods.

What can you do with a trident?
A trident works as both a melee weapon and a throwable ranged weapon. Minecraft’s official article says a thrown trident can be retrieved when it lands and describes four special enchantments:
- Loyalty returns a thrown trident to its owner.
- Impaling adds damage to aquatic mobs or to regular mobs in wet conditions.
- Riptide propels the player when the trident is thrown in wet conditions.
- Channeling can summon lightning when a thrown trident hits a mob during a thunderstorm.
Developer Jens Bergensten described it as “a weapon that is intended to be used underwater” and said, “You can both swing with it and throw it,” in the official article.
