Can You Keep Playing Fallout 1 After the Ending?

Fallout 1 ends the active playthrough after the finale. Load a pre-ending save for missed quests, or investigate the community Fallout Et Tu mod for a reported continuation option.

No—not in standard Fallout 1. The ending sequence ends that playthrough, so you can’t keep roaming the wasteland in the same save afterward. To finish optional quests you missed, load a save from before the finale; if you have none, a community mod offers a possible alternative.

How to return to unfinished quests

If you haven’t reached the finale yet, make a separate save before it and complete any remaining quests first. Fallout’s manual recommends saving often and using more than one save slot, and says a saved game lets you return later and pick up where you left off. It also suggests talking with people and exploring locations for clues and important places. Read the Fallout manual.

If you’ve already finished the game, choose Load Game and restore your latest save from before the ending. The manual describes ten save slots in its edition, but that count should not be assumed to apply to every modern build. If you have no earlier save, the sources available do not establish a vanilla way to reopen the completed playthrough; starting another run is the straightforward option.

Vanilla Fallout 1 vs. a modded continuation

Route What happens after the ending What to know
Standard Fallout 1 The ending sequence ends the active playthrough; there is no post-ending free roam. Load a pre-ending save to do missed quests.
Fallout Et Tu / Fo1in2 A community answer reports that this modded version can offer a choice to continue when the campaign ends. It is not a vanilla feature. Check the project’s current instructions and compatibility before installing; a community report does not establish support for a particular game version or installation.

The distinction matters if you are choosing a launch option on a supported Bethesda build: Bethesda describes a normal version with community-modified high resolution and a classic version, and says both can use the same saves. That statement does not guarantee compatibility for every third-party mod. Bethesda’s explanation of the launch options.
