Yes. The native PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft is Bedrock Edition, so it can cross-play with supported Bedrock devices. Mojang released it on October 22, 2024. That is different from running the PS4 version through backward compatibility: the native PS5 release is built to use PS5 hardware more effectively.
Is Minecraft on PS5 Bedrock or Java?
It is Bedrock. Mojang says Minecraft for PS5 supports cross-play with other Minecraft: Bedrock Edition devices. Java Edition is a separate version with a different multiplayer system. Its multiplayer supports Windows, Mac, and Linux; Java and Bedrock players cannot join one another directly.

That means a PS5 player can play with friends on supported Bedrock platforms, such as Xbox, Windows, and mobile. Compatibility depends on the other player using Bedrock too—not simply having a game called Minecraft.
How to get the native PS5 version
| What you own | What to do |
|---|---|
| Minecraft for PS4 digitally | On the PS5, sign in and claim the native PS5 version through the PlayStation Store. Mojang says existing PS4 owners can get it at no charge; check the local Store listing for the current claim option. |
| Minecraft for PS4 on disc | Claim the PS5 version through the PlayStation Store on the PS5, then keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever you play. |
| No PlayStation copy | Purchase Minecraft through the PlayStation Store or a video-game retailer. Check your local Store for current availability and pricing. |
Mojang’s launch instructions confirm the PS4 upgrade route and the disc requirement for disc owners. The native PS5 version is the one to use if you want the PS5 release rather than the PS4 version running through backward compatibility.

Can PS5 Minecraft play with Xbox or PC?
Yes, when the other players are using a supported Bedrock version. Mojang describes the PS5 release as cross-play compatible with Bedrock devices. An Xbox or Windows player on Bedrock can therefore play with a PS5 player; a Java player on PC cannot join that Bedrock session directly.
Minecraft’s edition guide explains the distinction: Java multiplayer spans Windows, Mac, and Linux, while Bedrock supports cross-play among supported consoles, Windows, and mobile devices. The edition—not just the device—determines compatibility.

Link a Microsoft account for cross-platform play
Minecraft Help says PlayStation players need to link a Microsoft account with their PlayStation Network account to play with friends across platforms or join Realms. The usual in-game setup is to choose Microsoft sign-in, then follow the displayed QR code or enter the on-screen code at microsoft.com/link. Minecraft Help notes that only one Microsoft account can be linked to a PSN account.
Do you need Realms or a PlayStation subscription?
Realms is an optional paid service for keeping a Bedrock world available for friends to visit. Mojang lists Bedrock Realms and Realms Plus as offerings and supports Bedrock cross-platform play through Realms. You do not need Realms simply because you are playing cross-platform; whether a particular multiplayer mode requires a subscription depends on the mode and current PlayStation service rules. Those requirements can vary by region and account circumstances, so check current PlayStation and Minecraft account information for your setup.

What the native PS5 version changes
In its October 2024 launch announcement, Mojang said the native PS5 version offers greater render distance while running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, and said native development would let Minecraft use PS5 hardware more effectively. These are Mojang’s stated launch characteristics, not a promise that every scene, display, or configuration will deliver identical results.
