If you can’t see or join a friend’s Bronzebeard’s Tavern server, try setting your Steam Download region to match the host’s. A developer recommended this as a workaround for players in different countries, and the original poster later said it worked. It addresses a specific server-discovery and joining problem—not every kind of multiplayer lag.
First, identify what “lagging” means
Not seeing a server, an invite that does nothing, being kicked while joining, and stuttering or delayed movement after a session starts are different symptoms. The documented region workaround concerns finding and joining a friend. The available sources do not establish a common cause or universal fix for lag during active play.
- Server missing: the host’s session does not appear in the server list.
- Join action fails: an invite or Steam chat join does not connect.
- Disconnect while loading: you are kicked before entering the session.
- Lag during play: movement or actions are delayed, or the game stutters after joining.
Fix a missing friend’s server by matching Steam Download regions
In a Steam Community thread about players in different countries who could not find or join one another, developer ethonk suggested that one player change their Download region to match the other’s. The thread author later reported that it worked. This is a reported workaround for that situation, not a guarantee for every connection problem. Read the Steam discussion.
- Ask the host which Download region they use in Steam.
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Set Download region to the same region as the host.
- Refresh the server list or restart Steam, then try finding or joining the session again.
The developer’s December 3, 2023 reply also said the game’s networking was being reworked to support the number of servers running at once at that time. That is historical context, not confirmation of a current networking condition.

Try the game’s Steam invite and join options
December 2023 update notes document the addition of Steam invitations and direct joining through friends. If the host already has a session open, try the supported invite or friend-join route rather than relying only on the server browser. The notes establish that these options were added; they do not guarantee that they will resolve every current connection failure. View the archived December 2023 update notes on SteamDB.
Update the game if you are kicked while joining
A December 6, 2023 connection hotfix addressed an issue that kicked players while they were joining a server. Make sure everyone is running the current game build before troubleshooting that particular symptom. The historical fix does not establish that updating will resolve present-day in-session latency. Check whether a sudden failure is a Steam outage
In an August 2024 discussion, a developer attributed that day’s joining failures to a Steam server outage and said service had recovered. That was a report about a specific past incident, not a live status update. If several friends suddenly cannot join any session, check Steam’s current service status before changing your PC or network setup. Read the August 2024 discussion.
For lag after the game starts, collect details before changing hardware
The available reports do not verify a cause or tested fix for general latency or stuttering during active play. Before escalating the problem, note:

- Whether the host, one guest, or every player is affected.
- Whether the issue happens while browsing, loading, or actively playing.
- Whether it recurs when a different player hosts.
- Whether the host and guest use different Steam Download regions.
These details help distinguish a friend-discovery issue from a problem affecting one client or the session as a whole; they are diagnostic notes, not a proven remedy.

A player discussion asks whether a high-end PC hosting the game needs more RAM, but it does not establish a diagnosis or report a confirmed solution. Steam lists 6 GB RAM as the game’s minimum requirement, along with 1–8 player support and 2 GB of available storage. Those are store specifications, not evidence that a RAM upgrade fixes multiplayer lag. Check the Bronzebeard’s Tavern Steam listing. A separate Steam discussion raises the RAM question without resolving it.
