Yes. You can clear a pillager outpost and turn it into a Minecraft base. But defeating the pillagers already there does not permanently stop new ones from spawning, so plan for ongoing spawn management rather than treating the tower as automatically safe.
What happens after you clear an outpost?
Clearing the outpost removes its current occupants, but pillagers—including captains—can eventually respawn. The Minecraft Wiki’s outpost-defeating tutorial lists converting the structure into a base as one possible use after clearing it, while warning that the location can become occupied again.
That means an outpost can work as a home, but moving into the tower is not the same as permanently claiming a safe zone. Secure the rooms you use and consider the surrounding area when managing spawns.
How to turn the outpost into a base
- Clear the structure and immediate area. Deal with the pillagers before building or moving in. The outpost tutorial describes clearing it as a viable challenge at different stages of play.
- Secure your living space. Make the interior difficult for hostile mobs to enter, and light rooms and exposed surfaces you want to keep safe. Lighting is practical spawn-management advice, not a guarantee that one torch will permanently disable every outpost spawn.
- Manage spawnable surfaces nearby. The tutorial recommends lighting the area and removing grass or sand as part of spawn prevention. Think beyond the tower: pillagers may spawn in the outpost’s associated area, not just inside the visible building.
- Keep useful materials before rebuilding. If you want the outpost’s banners, crops, or building materials, collect what matters before major changes. Generated outposts do not necessarily contain every listed feature.
Why demolishing the tower may not make it safe
In Java Edition, the Minecraft Wiki’s pillager-farming tutorial describes an outpost spawn region measuring 72 × 54 × 72 blocks, centered on the middle block of the highest floor. It also says that destroying the visible tower does not stop the outpost’s pillager spawning. These are Java-specific details from a community-maintained tutorial, not a universal coordinate map for every edition.

So, if you are playing Java, do not assume that renovating or removing the tower alone will solve the problem. The relevant spawn area can extend beyond the structure. The precise spawn-proofing work depends on the area and your goal.
Java and Bedrock: don’t assume the same spawn-proofing plan
The detailed 72 × 54 × 72 spawn-region description above is for Java Edition. It should not be applied to Bedrock as though the mechanics and coordinates were identical.

Microsoft’s Bedrock entity-spawning guide explains general spawning factors such as valid locations, conditions, population caps, and weights. It is creator documentation, not a vanilla Bedrock pillager-outpost coordinate guide. For Bedrock, avoid relying on Java coordinates for a block-by-block plan; verify current Bedrock-specific mechanics before investing in extensive spawn-proofing.
Choose between a home and a farm
| Goal | What to focus on | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary base | Clear the area, secure the interior, and manage exposed spawnable surfaces. | New pillagers can eventually appear; the tower alone does not guarantee safety. |
| Pillager or raid-farm project | Use an edition-specific farm design and its technical instructions. | A farm is a separate build, not simply a tower converted into living space. |
| Both | Decide how the farm area and living area will coexist before modifying the outpost. | Spawn management for a farm may conflict with making the surroundings quiet and secure. |
The outpost tutorial also distinguishes base conversion from a raid-farm project. Treat them as separate goals unless you are deliberately designing a combined build.

What an outpost can offer beyond shelter
Outposts may provide useful materials and features, including banners and crops, which can be reasons to clear rather than simply demolish the structure. The Minecraft Wiki’s outpost tutorial discusses these possible rewards and post-clear uses; their presence varies by generated outpost.
Pillager outposts were introduced in Minecraft’s 2018 development snapshots. Mojang’s November 23, 2018 announcement is useful as feature history, but it does not establish current spawn rules.
