For remote online multiplayer, Minecraft requires Xbox Game Pass Core on Xbox, PlayStation Plus on PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Online on Switch. PC players can play online with an internet connection without a console multiplayer subscription. If everyone is together, local split-screen or LAN/Wi-Fi play can avoid remote online multiplayer.
Do you need a membership to play Minecraft online?
If friends are in different locations and you are playing on a console, the console account needs that platform’s online multiplayer service. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements identify Xbox Game Pass Core for Xbox, PlayStation Plus for PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Online for Nintendo Switch. These are separate from buying Minecraft.

On PC, Minecraft says an internet connection is the requirement for online play; a console multiplayer service is not needed. Players still have to use compatible editions: Java and Bedrock players cannot join each other’s games. Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock guide explains the edition distinction.
Which membership-free options work?
| How you play | Membership needed? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Remote online play on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch | Yes, the respective console online service is required. | Use a compatible edition and version, and check account permissions. Minecraft’s requirements page lists the platform conditions. |
| Remote online play on PC | No console multiplayer subscription; an internet connection is required. | Choose the same edition as your friends. Java and Bedrock do not cross-play. |
| Console split-screen | No remote online session is involved. | Minecraft lists split-screen for console Bedrock, supporting up to four players on one screen, according to its platform feature page. |
| LAN or Wi-Fi multiplayer | No console online service for local-network play. | Minecraft lists LAN/Wi-Fi multiplayer for both Java and Bedrock. Players need to be together on the same local network; this does not connect friends in separate locations. |
| Joining a friend’s Realm | A Realm subscription is not required for invited players, but console players still need their console online service. | The host pays for the Realm. Java and Bedrock Realms are separate and accept players on the matching edition. See Minecraft Realms. |
How to join a friend’s world
For a Bedrock friend-hosted world, Minecraft’s joining guide describes this route:
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Make sure both players are signed in, friends in Minecraft, and using compatible game versions and editions.
- The host starts an online world and allows multiplayer.
- The joining player opens Play, selects Friends, then chooses the friend’s joinable world.
If the world does not appear, confirm that both players are online and that multiplayer permissions allow joining. On consoles, also confirm the required platform service is active.

A Microsoft account
A free Microsoft account supports Minecraft sign-in and account-linked features across devices. It is not the paid console network service, so creating one does not remove the Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch online requirement. For child accounts, privacy settings can block multiplayer, invitations, communication, or Realms even when the console membership is active. Minecraft explains account and parental controls in its Microsoft account guide.

Realms
Realms is an optional hosted world that stays online; it is not a workaround for console network membership. The Minecraft Realms page displayed these US monthly rates when accessed in 2026:
- Bedrock Realms: $3.99 USD per month for the host plus two simultaneous players.
- Bedrock Realms Plus: $7.99 USD per month for the host plus ten simultaneous players.
Invited friends do not need to buy their own Realms subscription. Prices, trial eligibility, and features can vary by region and change over time; console online access is sold separately.
