Yes. In Java Edition, a community-maintained Minecraft Wiki tutorial says to set a new Superflat world’s surface above Y=40 to prevent slime spawns. In an existing world, /gamerule doMobSpawning false stops natural mob spawning broadly—not just slimes. For more selective control, spawn-proof the affected areas; torches alone do not stop slime-chunk spawns.
Choose a method based on what you want to keep
| Your goal | Approach | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Stop slimes in a new Java Superflat world but keep other natural mobs | Set the custom terrain surface above Y=40 during world generation, as described in the Minecraft Wiki Superflat tutorial. | This is a world-generation choice, not a simple toggle for an existing flat world. The height guidance is Java-specific and comes from a community-maintained tutorial. |
| Stop new natural spawns in an existing Java world | Run /gamerule doMobSpawning false. |
It affects natural mob spawning generally, not only slimes. Existing mobs are not removed, and the tutorial says spawners are unaffected. |
| Remove hostile mobs broadly | Change difficulty to Peaceful in the game menus or run /difficulty peaceful. |
Peaceful affects hostile mobs generally and changes other gameplay effects; it is not a slime-only control. |
| Keep other mobs and target particular areas | Identify the affected Java slime chunks and block spawning on their surfaces with bottom slabs or path blocks. The tutorial also mentions covering ground with water. | This requires finding and treating the relevant spawn surfaces; water may disrupt how the area is used. |
| Clear slimes that are already present or keep clearing new ones | With command or command-block access, use /kill @e[type=minecraft:slime] or teleport slimes away. Confirm syntax for your game version. |
Killing may leave drops. The tutorial says teleporting slimes into the void avoids slimeball drops. |
For a new Java Superflat world: raise the surface
The Minecraft Wiki’s Superflat tutorial recommends setting the surface above Y=40 to stop slimes from spawning. This is guidance for Java Edition, and custom-preset behavior can depend on the version you play. It is a world-generation solution, so it is most useful when creating a world rather than trying to change an existing flat world’s terrain settings.
For an existing world: choose between global rules and local prevention
Disable natural mob spawning
In Java Edition, run /gamerule doMobSpawning false. This prevents natural mob spawning broadly, so it also affects mobs besides slimes. It does not remove mobs already in the world; the tutorial says mob spawners are unaffected. Use it when you want a quick global change, not when you need other natural spawns to continue.
Use Peaceful only if the broader change is acceptable
Peaceful is another broad option for stopping hostile mobs. Change the difficulty in the menus or use /difficulty peaceful. Because this changes hostile-mob behavior generally, it may not suit a world where you want to keep other hostile mobs.

Spawn-proof the area if you want other mobs to remain
For targeted control, locate the affected Java slime chunks and make their spawn surfaces unsuitable with blocks such as bottom slabs or path blocks. The Minecraft Wiki slime-farming tutorial also mentions covering the ground with water, but that may be disruptive. Torches are not a substitute: the tutorial says slime-chunk spawns can happen at any light level.
Bedrock Edition: do not assume the Java height advice applies
The above-Y=40 recommendation is not confirmed by the official Bedrock references cited here. Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock spawn-rules example identifies the entity as minecraft:slime, places it in the monster population group, and shows difficulty and biome filters in a behavior-pack example. Those details describe Bedrock behavior-pack rules; they do not establish the Java Superflat height mechanic for Bedrock.

Microsoft Learn describes Bedrock’s domobspawning rule as controlling whether mobs spawn into the game in its commands documentation. Check your edition and command permissions before applying platform-specific instructions. The sources cited here do not establish a vanilla slime-only gamerule.
Why lighting does not solve slime-chunk spawns
Slimes in slime chunks can spawn at any light level, according to the Minecraft Wiki slime-farming tutorial. Adding torches may help with other hostile mobs, but it will not prevent slime spawns in those chunks.
