Short answer: a Core 2 Duo does not meet Rockstar’s published minimum CPU requirement for GTAV Legacy. Rockstar lists an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core as the minimum. That puts a Core 2 Duo below the stated CPU floor, though it does not by itself prove the game will never launch on a particular PC.
Which GTA V edition are you trying to run?
Rockstar lists separate PC requirements for GTAV Legacy and GTAV Enhanced. Its store says Legacy is included for hardware that does not meet the minimum requirements for the Enhanced upgrades. Compare your computer with the edition you intend to install; the Legacy minimums do not apply to Enhanced.
| Requirement | GTAV Legacy minimum | GTAV Enhanced minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Windows 10 (latest update) |
| Processor | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 2.40 GHz, or AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core at 2.5 GHz | AMD FX-9590 or Intel Core i7-4770 |
| Memory | 4 GB | 8 GB |
| Graphics | NVIDIA 9800 GT 1 GB, or AMD HD 4870 1 GB (DX 10, 10.1, 11) | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1630 (4 GB VRAM), or AMD Radeon RX 6400 (4 GB VRAM) |
| Storage | 125 GB | 105 GB; SSD required |
These are Rockstar’s published requirements, not independent performance tests or a guarantee that a below-minimum PC will work. Rockstar also says requirements can change as downloadable content and programming change. See the Rockstar Store’s current GTAV requirements for the listing.
What does the Core 2 Duo comparison mean?
Rockstar names a Core 2 Quad Q6600 for Legacy, not a Core 2 Duo. The family names are not interchangeable: a Core 2 Duo does not satisfy the CPU model Rockstar specifies as the minimum. So, based on CPU alone, the PC is below the published Legacy minimum; it is also below Enhanced’s much newer listed processor floor.

That does not establish whether a specific machine will launch the game, how well it might run, or what frame rate it could achieve. The words “Core 2 Duo” do not identify the exact processor model, graphics card, RAM, operating system, or storage. A machine-specific verdict needs those details, and no performance figure can be inferred from the CPU family label.
How to check your PC’s full specifications
- Open the Windows Run dialog, type dxdiag, and press Enter to launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- Check the System tab for the operating system, processor, and memory.
- Check the Display tab for the display adapter, chip type, video memory, and graphics driver.
- Compare every listed component, plus available storage and drive type, with the requirements for your intended edition.
Rockstar’s DxDiag compatibility guide, last updated April 28, 2024, explains which PC details to inspect. If the CPU is below the Legacy minimum, treat the computer as not meeting Rockstar’s published specification even if the other parts are adequate.

Should you upgrade the processor?
Not from the “Core 2 Duo” label alone. The CPU upgrades available depend on the computer’s platform and motherboard, which the family name does not identify. Check the exact system and board details before considering any component change; a processor upgrade also would not resolve a shortfall in memory, graphics, operating system, or storage.
