Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake keeps the original adventure’s story and core design while rebuilding its visuals and adding local co-op. Reviews praise the emotional journey and updated presentation, but differ on whether the remake offers enough for returning players—and whether sharing control between two people changes what made the original distinctive.

What is Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake?

Released on February 28, 2024, the remake is an updated version of the 2013 adventure, developed by Avantgarden SRL and published by 505 Games. Two brothers travel in search of the Water of Life to save their ailing father. Exploration and puzzles rely on the brothers’ different abilities, so the central design asks players to coordinate their actions rather than treating the pair as interchangeable characters.

505 Games describes the remake as faithful to the original’s gameplay and story, with rebuilt characters and landscapes and updated graphics, performance, and gameplay. PlayStation’s listing also mentions new secrets. The available descriptions do not establish a substantially expanded story or campaign. See the publisher’s game page and the PlayStation listing.

What do reviews say about the remake?

Reviewers’ responses turn on what they value in a remake. The updated presentation and the return of an affecting story are reasons some critics recommend it. Others see a faithful revival with limited novelty: worthwhile for players who want to experience the adventure in its new form, but not essential for people who already know it. Metacritic’s review page collects both kinds of response; it is more useful as a picture of that divide than as a single verdict.

For a dated user-review snapshot, Steam showed 70% positive from 1,005 user reviews and a critic score of 79 when the listing was accessed on October 8, 2026. Those figures describe that snapshot, not a permanent rating; user totals and percentages can change. Check the Steam listing for its current figures.

Is local co-op a good way to play?

The remake supports solo play and local co-op; PlayStation lists one to two players. In solo mode, one person controls both brothers, preserving the original’s unusual dual-character setup. In co-op, two people divide the brothers between them, which can make the adventure a shared couch experience but also changes how its coordination works.

That difference is central to PC Gamer critic Robin Valentine’s negative review. Valentine argues that co-op departs from the intent of a design built around one player controlling both brothers. The game’s warning, as reported in that review, says: “the gameplay and story will feel different with two players… singleplayer remains the intended experience”. That is a critic’s assessment of the design, not a guarantee that every pair will enjoy co-op less. Read the PC Gamer review for that argument.

Remake or original: which should you play?

If you care most about… The remake The original
Visual presentation Rebuilt characters and landscapes, with updated graphics and performance, according to 505 Games. The original presentation, rather than the remake’s rebuild.
Story and campaign Faithful to the original story and gameplay; PlayStation mentions new secrets, but the available sources do not establish a significantly expanded campaign. The 2013 story and core experience in its original form.
How you play Solo dual-control or local co-op, with one player per brother. The original’s one-player design of controlling both brothers.

Choose the remake if you want its refreshed presentation, want to play locally with someone else, or have not experienced the story. If you have already played the original and mainly want substantial new material, the remake’s stated scope offers little evidence of a greatly expanded adventure; the reviews that call it nonessential reflect that limitation. The official listings confirm a PS5 edition and PC and current-generation console availability, but check the store for your platform and region before buying.
