Verdict: Brotato is an appealing pick if you want quick, replayable arena-survival runs built around weapon and item choices. Its short waves, auto-fire controls, and character variety make the loop easy to understand; the main question for any player is whether repeating that loop and managing increasingly crowded fights stays enjoyable. Steam’s user reviews are strongly positive, but they are not a critic score or a substitute for your own taste.
What is Brotato?
Brotato is a top-down arena shooter roguelite developed and published by Blobfish. After a spaceship crashes on an alien planet, the potato protagonist fights off waves of enemies. You choose a character, survive timed rounds, collect materials and experience, then use a shop between waves to shape the run with weapons and items. Steam describes the game as supporting up to six weapons at once. Steam’s store listing gives June 23, 2023 as the full release date and September 27, 2022 as the start of Early Access.
What do the reviews say?
Steam displayed 96% positive English-language reviews from 32,489 reviews overall and 89% positive recent reviews from 1,072 reviews in the 30 days before October 8, 2026. Those are Steam user-review snapshots, not critic ratings or a universal verdict; both counts and percentages can change.
The appeal is easy to identify in the design: each run asks you to make a stream of small decisions, from character and weapon choices to what you buy between waves. The more important question is whether those choices make repeated runs feel meaningfully different to you. Busy encounters and rising difficulty can be exciting for players who enjoy adapting a build under pressure, but may feel repetitive or overwhelming if you want a more story-led game or slower combat. That is a taste-based assessment of the game’s structure, not a claim of hands-on testing.

How does a run work?
Steam says runs take under 30 minutes and individual waves last 20–90 seconds. Between waves, a shop gives you opportunities to spend collected materials on items and weapons. The compact format makes the central loop legible: survive, collect, choose upgrades, and see how the build holds up in the next wave.
Weapons auto-fire by default, and manual aiming is available. That setup emphasizes movement and build choices without removing the option to aim yourself. Steam also tags the game for controller use.

Is Brotato worth buying?
Consider Brotato if you enjoy short roguelite runs, experimenting with different characters and weapon combinations, and improving through repeated attempts. Steam lists dozens of characters and hundreds of items and weapons, giving the game a broad set of ingredients for builds. The key caveat is that a large pool of options does not guarantee every run will feel distinct: your enjoyment depends on how much you like refining builds within a recurring wave-and-shop structure.
It may be a weaker fit if you are looking primarily for a campaign, narrative progression, or online multiplayer. Steam’s listed co-op mode is local and shared/split-screen, not online co-op.

Does Brotato have co-op?
Yes. Steam lists local shared/split-screen co-op for up to four players, alongside single-player. The listing does not describe online co-op, so do not buy it expecting to join friends remotely through an online multiplayer mode.
How challenging is it, and what accessibility options are listed?
The Steam listing says players can adjust enemy health, damage, and speed. Its official May 12 update announcement also describes a Nightmare difficulty, new enemies, a character, and a weapon. Since availability can differ by platform and version, check the listing for your edition before relying on a specific update or difficulty mode.

Which version should you get?
PC requirements on Steam
Steam lists the same minimum specifications for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS + Linux: a 2 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, OpenGL 3+ graphics, and 200 MB of storage. The Windows game requirement is listed as Windows 7 or later. Separately, Steam notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024; that client requirement should not be confused with the game’s listed operating-system requirement.
Mobile editions
Blobfish’s pinned Steam statement dated February 14, 2023 says it signed the exclusive mobile porting and publishing rights to Erabit Studios in December 2022. Blobfish identifies Erabit’s App Store, Google Play, and TapTap pages as official channels and warns about pirated versions outside them. Verify the publisher and distribution channel when downloading, and do not assume the mobile edition has feature or update parity with PC. Read Blobfish’s mobile distribution statement.

- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
DLC and soundtrack
The Steam listing includes the paid Abyssal Terrors DLC and the Brotato Soundtrack. An official announcement said Primal Dread was planned for Steam later in 2026, but a plan is not confirmation that it has launched. Check the current store page for its status and for platform-specific availability. The official announcement feed also identifies Adonai as the composer since Abyssal Terrors and says Adonai would compose the Primal Dread soundtrack. See Brotato’s official Steam announcements.
Bottom line
Brotato is worth considering for players who want brisk, repeatable arena-survival runs, build experimentation, and local co-op. Its Steam reception is notably positive, while the practical buying decision comes down to whether its compact wave-and-shop loop and escalating combat are the kind of repetition you enjoy. Check the store listing for current reviews, edition details, and DLC availability before purchasing.
