God of War (2018): axe, shield, runic attacks, and Atreus
PlayStation’s 2018 hands-on report describes a combat loop built around throwing and recalling the Leviathan Axe. Kratos can also fight barehanded, block and parry with his shield, and use runic abilities; Atreus contributes support with his arrows. These distinct actions let the player move between ranged axe throws, close combat, defense, and companion-assisted attacks.
Santa Monica Studio’s Denny Yeh said the team brought the camera closer during the opening Stranger/Baldur fight because “The close camera would help to sell the impact of each punch.” That is the designer’s explanation of a presentation choice, not an independent verdict about which game’s combat is better. In a PlayStation developer roundtable, Torn Banner Studios Design Director Leif Walter described God of War (2018)’s combat as “forceful, kinetic, and bombastic”—his assessment rather than a universal critical consensus.

How do progression and customization compare?
The games both offer ways to shape combat, but the official descriptions do not establish mechanically equivalent progression systems.

- Choose Black Myth: Wukong if the Chinese mythological setting, its connection to Journey to the West, staff techniques, and combinations of spells, abilities, weapons, and equipment are the draw.
- Choose God of War (2018) if you want its Norse story, the Leviathan Axe throw-and-recall loop, shield defense, runic abilities, Atreus’s combat support, and explicitly described gear and skill progression.
- Compare them as separate interpretations of mythic action if you are interested in both: the shared genre makes the comparison useful, but their story foundations and combat systems differ.

PlayStation lists Black Myth: Wukong for PS5 with a release date of August 20, 2024. Its listing identifies the game as one-player and places it in the role-playing, adventure, and action genres. PlayStation’s franchise page lists God of War (2018) as a 2018 PS4 release and says that it, along with God of War Ragnarök, is available on PS4, PS5, and PC.
