CCI: Did Witchblade Ever Go From Comic to Console?

Witchblade reached prototype and console-proposal stages, but available sources do not establish a released console game.

Witchblade never has a confirmed released console game in the available evidence. The comic property did inspire an unreleased prototype and at least one reported console proposal, but those stages are not the same as a finished game reaching players.

What happened to the Witchblade game?

The clearest direct account comes from Top Cow executive Matt Hawkins, who recalled an unreleased prototype: “No, we had a—there is a prototype that was done for a Witchblade game that never actually got made. We’ve had that option for development by video game studios multiple times, it just never came out.” (Cultured Vultures interview with Matt Hawkins.)

That recollection establishes that a prototype existed, and Hawkins says studios had taken the property on for development more than once. It does not identify a retail release or settle whether the prototype was tied to any particular console project. The accounts that can be placed on a timeline differ in platform, studio attribution and certainty.

Witchblade console project reports, compared

Time and platform What was reported What the evidence establishes
Around 2002 — original Xbox Unseen64 says The Collective pitched a Witchblade beat-’em-up for the original Xbox and describes it as quickly cancelled. A retrospective archive account of a pitch and cancellation. Unseen64 says a playable demo may have existed, but presents that as an assumption, not a confirmed fact. (Unseen64, 2020-11-02.)
September 2005 — Xbox 360 NAG Magazine reported that Climax was working on a Witchblade game, compared its style to Tomb Raider, and named Atari as publisher. A contemporary magazine report, not proof of an official announcement, a finished Xbox 360 build or a release. The available sources do not establish what became of it. (NAG Magazine, September 2005.)
Prototype — platform and date not specified in the recollection Hawkins said a prototype was made but “never actually got made” as a released game. A direct executive recollection that a prototype existed; it does not identify which reported project it belonged to. (Cultured Vultures.)

These accounts should not be merged into one development history. The original Xbox pitch and the later Xbox 360 report name different studios and platforms, and the sources do not say whether they were related. The 2005 article does not establish that the Xbox 360 project was cancelled, completed, or connected to Hawkins’s prototype.

Why “prototype” does not mean a released game

A pitch is a proposal; a prototype is an early build or demonstration of an idea. Neither shows that a game reached retail. Unseen64’s possible-demo wording is explicitly uncertain, while Hawkins’s recollection confirms a prototype but says the game never came out. No source here documents a Witchblade console release.

So the accurate answer to whether Witchblade went from comic to console is: it got as far as development proposals and a prototype, but a released console game is not established.

Where to find Witchblade today

For readers looking to experience the property, the substantiated route is the comic series and its collected editions, not a Witchblade game. Top Cow’s official catalog lists issues and collections (Witchblade catalog). Image Comics announced a new series relaunch for July 2024 and identifies Marc Silvestri as an original co-creator and Top Cow CEO (Image Comics relaunch announcement, 2024-04-18).
