The full ranking below is an editorial guide, not a developer ranking or a universal build prescription: enemy defenses, party roles, subclass, encounter layout, and play style can all change which spell is best for you.
One planning detail matters from the start: Sorcerers learn a limited set of class spells, and those known spells cannot be freely swapped whenever you want. Check the level access and role of a spell before learning it. Sorcerer spell attacks and spell-save DCs use Charisma. BG3 Wiki’s Sorcerer spell list
How this Sorcerer spell ranking works
The order weighs broad usefulness across a typical campaign: how much a spell can change a fight, how often its conditions are likely to apply, and whether it brings damage, defense, control, or exploration utility. A spell’s level is the slot level it requires, not the character level at which it becomes available; cantrips generally do not spend spell slots, and some spells become more powerful when cast with a higher-level slot. BG3 Wiki: Spells
Metamagic is the Sorcerer’s defining way to adapt eligible spells. Larian describes it as allowing Sorcerers to adapt spells during combat, including changes such as range or duration and hitting two enemies with one spell. Compatibility depends on the spell and Metamagic option; do not assume every combination works. Larian Studios, Community Update #14
#1 Best Overall
- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
Concentration is another key cost: you can maintain only one concentration spell at a time, and taking damage can require a Constitution save to keep it. A strong concentration spell may therefore displace another strong option, such as Haste or Wall of Fire. BG3 Wiki: Concentration
The 25 best Sorcerer spells
-
Counterspell
A reaction that can stop an enemy spell before its effects land. Preventing a dangerous effect can be worth more than adding damage, particularly when an enemy’s spell threatens several party members. Sorcerer spell access is listed by the BG3 Wiki.
-
Fireball
A dependable answer to clustered enemies: it deals 8d6 fire damage on a failed Dexterity save and can affect an area rather than a single target. Its value falls when enemies are spread out or fire damage is a poor match.
-
Haste
A potent action-economy boost for the Sorcerer or an ally. Its concentration requirement is the main trade-off: maintaining Haste means giving up another concentration spell for as long as it lasts.

Misty Step
Bonus-action repositioning can get you out of immediate danger, onto high ground, or across a tactical gap without spending your action on movement. It is useful even when dealing damage is not the immediate problem.
-
Hold Person
Against an eligible humanoid that fails its Wisdom save, this control spell can create a major opening for the party. It is not a general-purpose answer to every enemy: target type and the saving throw determine whether it applies.
-
Globe of Invulnerability
A powerful defensive option for a small area in a difficult encounter. Its best use depends on keeping the right characters within the protected space, and its high-level slot makes it a consequential choice.

-
Chain Lightning
A high-end option for damaging multiple targets with lightning; the spell list records 10d8 lightning damage and a Dexterity save. It earns its place when several enemies can be caught and the slot cost is justified.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Hypnotic Pattern
Can turn a crowded fight by incapacitating multiple enemies that fail the save. It is less useful when the encounter resists the effect, when allies are in harm’s way, or when the situation makes the affected enemies hard to exploit.
-
Shield
This reaction can prevent a hit and does not occupy your concentration slot. That makes it a strong defensive pick even in a loadout built around maintaining another spell.
-
Magic Missile
Reliable force damage without an attack roll makes this useful when landing damage matters more than maximizing a single hit. Its consistency is the selling point, not its ability to match the burst of a major area spell.
-
Lightning Bolt
Deals 8d6 lightning damage and rewards lining enemies up in its path. Its geometry can make it excellent in the right space and awkward when targets are scattered.

Ice Storm
Combines area damage with terrain disruption, giving it value beyond its Dexterity-save damage. It is a flexible choice when both hurting enemies and making the ground harder to navigate matter.
-
Slow
Can hinder several enemies and reduce the pressure they put on your party. It requires concentration, so compare its control against Hypnotic Pattern or another concentration spell that fits the encounter better.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition - PlayStation 4- Contains Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, & Siege of Dragonspear

-
Wall of Fire
Creates area denial and can deal repeated damage when enemies must move through or remain near the wall. Its concentration cost competes directly with options such as Haste.
-
Hold Monster
Extends the high-impact control idea of Hold Person to a wider target category. Its effectiveness still depends on the target failing a Wisdom save, and it uses concentration.

Dimension Door
Moves the caster and an ally when ordinary movement is not enough. It is an emergency positioning tool rather than a damage pick, and can be especially valuable when escape or reaching a critical position is the encounter’s main challenge.
-
Mirror Image
A self-defense option that does not require concentration. It suits a Sorcerer who expects to draw attacks and wants protection without giving up a concentration spell.
-
Cloud of Daggers
Deals damage in a constrained area, making placement and enemy movement central to its value. It is strongest when foes cannot simply avoid the area.
-
Shatter
An accessible area-damage option at a lower spell level than major blasts. The spell list records 3d8 thunder damage and a Constitution save, giving it a useful early role when several targets can be reached.

Chromatic Orb
A flexible early single-target spell whose elemental choice can help adapt to an enemy’s resistance or the environment. It offers a more tailored damage choice when a single target is the priority.
Rank #4
-
Cone of Cold
A powerful close-range area burst, but its range and positioning make it less safe and universal than a ranged blast. It is best when enemies are close enough to catch without putting the caster in a bad position.
-
Banishment
Can temporarily remove a dangerous target, buying the party time to handle other threats. It depends on the target’s Charisma save and consumes concentration, so it is a focused control choice rather than guaranteed removal.
-
Sleet Storm
Disrupts movement and can interfere with enemy concentration, but its usefulness depends heavily on the encounter and terrain. Consider whether control of the area is more valuable than immediate damage.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Enhance Ability
An out-of-combat utility pick that can help with ability checks, especially when the party needs a skill specialist for a particular task. It ranks here for practical utility rather than combat damage.
-
Feather Fall
Situational exploration insurance that can make a risky descent safer and preserve a route through vertical terrain. Its value is greatest when falling would derail the plan.
How to choose spells as you level
There is no universal spell package for every Sorcerer. If you are deciding what to learn at a level-up, start with the spell’s level access on the Sorcerer spell list, then ask what gap it fills in your party and how often its conditions will apply.
- Need reliable damage? Consider Magic Missile when accuracy is the priority, then area spells such as Fireball when enemies cluster.
- Need control? Match the spell to the target: Hold Person is for eligible humanoids, while broader options still depend on saves and encounter conditions.
- Already relying on concentration? Weigh any new concentration spell against the one it would displace. Keep non-concentration tools such as Shield or Mirror Image in mind for defense.
- Use Metamagic deliberately. Check that a spell works with the Metamagic option you intend to use; the feature can change practical reach, duration, or target count for eligible spells.
- Account for the party and battlefield. Enemy resistances, party roles, target spacing, and available movement can change a spell’s value more than its place in this general ranking.
What can change the ranking
This is a practical starting order, not a claim of tested damage superiority. The underlying spell references establish spell access and mechanics; they do not establish a universal winner across encounters. A party already rich in area damage may value control more, while enemies that resist a damage type can reduce the appeal of a particular blast. Subclass, player preference, and encounter geometry also matter.
