The best all-purpose elixir in Baldur’s Gate 3 depends on who drinks it: Cloud Giant Strength is extraordinary for a Strength-based character, while Bloodlust can generate extra actions for a character who reliably finishes enemies. This is a criteria-based ranking of combat impact and versatility, not an official tier list or a claim about comparative win rates. Build, encounter, and difficulty can change the order.
How to choose an elixir in BG3
Elixirs are single-use consumables, and a character generally has only one elixir effect active at a time: drinking a different elixir replaces the previous one. The choice has an opportunity cost, so match the effect to the character and the fights ahead rather than treating the top-ranked option as best for everyone. The mechanics below are described in a community-maintained reference, not an official Larian ranking; patch-sensitive details may change. BG3 Wiki: Elixir
The ranking favors high combat impact, but also considers how many builds can benefit, dependence on a particular stat or kill, and defensive or control value. The first two are close competitors: choose Strength for a character built to use it, or Bloodlust for a character likely to secure kills.
The 10 best elixirs, ranked
1. Elixir of Cloud Giant Strength
Sets the drinker’s Strength to 27 until Long Rest. That is a striking ceiling for a build that uses Strength, making it the strongest pick here when the character can turn that stat into meaningful combat value. 2. Elixir of Bloodlust
Grants 5 temporary hit points and, once per turn after the drinker kills an enemy, one additional action. Its potential to snowball through a fight is excellent, but the extra action depends on that character getting a kill. 3. Elixir of Battlemage’s Power
Arcane Acuity makes this a strong choice for a caster whose plan can capitalize on its spell-related benefits. It ranks below the top two because its value depends more on the character’s spells and build than the broader Strength or kill-trigger effects. BG3 Wiki: Elixir
4. Elixir of Vigilance
Provides +5 Initiative and prevents Surprise. Going early can help a character shape an encounter before enemies act, so this is a strong option when controlling the opening matters more than raising damage or a particular stat. BG3 Wiki: Elixir

5. Elixir of Hill Giant Strength
Sets Strength to 21 until Long Rest. It is a substantial Strength option, particularly before Cloud Giant Strength is available, and is most useful for characters that benefit from Strength. BG3 Wiki: Elixir

6. Elixir of Heroism
Improves attack rolls and saving throws while adding temporary hit points. That combination is flexible in combat, making Heroism a useful pick when a character could use both offensive reliability and extra resilience. BG3 Wiki: Elixir
7. Elixir of Viciousness
Reduces the critical-hit threshold by 1. It suits characters who make many attacks or whose build is organized around landing critical hits; its value is less universal than an effect that helps outside that plan. BG3 Wiki: Elixir

8. Elixir of Peerless Focus
Helps a character maintain Concentration and resist being Charmed or put into magical Sleep. It is a focused defensive choice for a character whose concentration-dependent abilities or vulnerability to those effects make protection especially valuable. BG3 Wiki: Elixir
9. Elixir of Guileful Movement
Protects against several movement and control effects, including threats such as difficult terrain, restraint, and paralysis. Consider it when those effects could keep a character from moving or cost them a turn; in that kind of encounter, its practical value can exceed its place in this general ranking. BG3 Wiki: Elixir
10. Elixir of See Invisibility
A situational answer to invisible targets. It ranks last only as a general-purpose pick: when a fight calls for dealing with invisibility, that specific utility can make it the right choice over a higher-ranked elixir. BG3 Wiki: Elixir

Bloodlust or Cloud Giant Strength?
Choose Cloud Giant Strength for a character whose build converts Strength into combat impact. Choose Bloodlust for a character likely to secure a kill and benefit from the additional action. Neither is the universal winner: the Strength effect does not help every build, while Bloodlust’s payoff depends on getting a kill.
When a lower-ranked elixir is the better choice
The ranking prioritizes general combat impact, not every encounter-specific need. Move Vigilance up when acting early or avoiding Surprise is the key concern; favor Peerless Focus when Concentration or protection from Charm and magical Sleep matters; and consider Guileful Movement when control effects threaten to deny movement or turns. See Invisibility likewise rises sharply when invisible targets are the problem.
Colossus and Barkskin are other situational alternatives. Their inclusion here is not a claim that they are inferior in every encounter; a specific build or fight can make a different elixir more useful. BG3 Wiki: Elixir
