You can finish Fallout 4 with the Minutemen leading the assault that destroys the Institute. “Only” does not mean you must reject every other faction from the start: you can work with other groups along the way, and the Brotherhood of Steel and Railroad can remain alive and non-hostile, depending on your choices.
What “only the Minutemen” means
If you mean choosing the Minutemen to finish the main story, yes. If you mean never helping another faction at any point, that is not required for this ending. The Minutemen route is a choice about who leads the endgame, not an exclusive allegiance from the opening hours. GosuNoob’s Minutemen walkthrough describes a route that can retain access to other faction stories, and says the Brotherhood and Railroad need not become enemies during the Minutemen ending.

The Institute is the faction you must confront to complete the Minutemen ending. The other factions’ fates depend on your quest decisions and whether they have become hostile; the ending does not automatically make every non-Minutemen faction friendly, nor does it guarantee that every faction quest remains available afterward.
How to pursue the Minutemen ending
Start with Preston Garvey and build settlement support
The Minutemen storyline begins early, around the events in Concord and your meeting with Preston Garvey. Helping settlements is part of developing the faction. Reclaiming the Castle is a key milestone and unlocks artillery support, according to the GosuNoob walkthrough and Vault-Tec.com’s Minutemen guide.

Watch for the break with the Institute
The quest Pinned can become a turning point. GosuNoob’s walkthrough describes siding with the Minutemen during the confrontation as a way to break with the Institute; a Charisma dialogue option can instead persuade the Minutemen to stand down and preserve the alliance at that stage. If you want the Minutemen endgame, pay attention to the dialogue and faction choices rather than assuming every early decision is irreversible.
Prepare for the final assault
After the Institute becomes hostile, the walkthrough describes a Minutemen sequence involving Form Ranks, gathering settlement support, defending the Castle, and then carrying out The Nuclear Option with the Minutemen. The exact triggers and order can depend on your playthrough, so treat that sequence as a guide rather than a universal checklist.

During the Institute assault, you can use Father’s terminal to order an evacuation. GosuNoob says this can spare some lives and make some fights easier; that should not be taken as a guarantee about every consequence of the ending.

| Faction | What to expect on the Minutemen route |
|---|---|
| Minutemen | Lead the final attack that destroys the Institute. |
| Institute | Must be confronted for this ending. |
| Brotherhood of Steel | Can remain non-hostile, depending on your choices and hostility state. |
| Railroad | Can remain non-hostile, depending on your choices and hostility state. |
This is not a promise that all faction content stays open after the ending. The Minutemen route offers flexibility about who survives, but your decisions determine whether the Brotherhood or Railroad turn against you. Bethesda describes Fallout 4 as an open-world role-playing game in which players decide the Commonwealth’s fate; that freedom does not make the factions’ questlines interchangeable or immune to consequences (Bethesda Game Studios).
