Baldur’s Gate 3 Review: A Masterpiece Built on Tabletop Rules’ Limits

Baldur’s Gate 3 turns D&D 5e into a reactive, tactical RPG. Its success shows both the value of the rules and the constraints of adapting tabletop play to a computer game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an outstanding role-playing game, but that does not make Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition a flawless foundation. Larian’s adaptation turns 5e into a reactive, cinematic computer RPG—and in doing so shows both the useful structure and the constraints of rules designed for a tabletop. The provocative claim that the game is “based on a bad tabletop game” is best read as a critique of those trade-offs, not an established verdict on D&D.

What is Baldur’s Gate 3, and do you need to know D&D?

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a party-based role-playing game set in the Forgotten Realms. Larian describes it as a player-driven story built on fifth-edition Dungeons & Dragons rules; the studio’s FAQ confirms it uses 5e. The game released on Steam on August 3, 2023, with Larian listed as developer and publisher on the store page.

You do not need to have played the earlier Baldur’s Gate games to follow this one. Larian says it tells a new story with new characters and that prior games are not required. Familiarity with tabletop D&D can help explain some terminology and mechanics, but the game presents those systems through its own interface rather than asking players to run a campaign at a table.

Why is Baldur’s Gate 3 so highly praised?

The case for Baldur’s Gate 3 rests on more than its D&D license. The Guardian’s review highlights its dense writing, visual world, branching dialogue, and alternate story moments. GameSpot praises the tactical party combat and the freedom to combine spells, terrain, and improvised actions to solve encounters. These are critical assessments, not claims of firsthand testing here.

  • Immersive RPG Experience: Dive into the highly-anticipated Baldur's Gate 3, a captivating role-playing game set in the iconic Dungeons & Dragons universe.
  • Deluxe Edition: This premium edition includes the base game, exclusive stickers, and an official soundtrack to enhance your adventure.
  • Epic Storytelling: Embark on an epic journey filled with complex narratives, challenging quests, and memorable characters.
  • Tactical Combat: Engage in strategic, turn-based battles that require careful planning and execution of your party's abilities.
  • Customizable Characters: Create and customize your own unique heroes, shaping their appearances, abilities, and personalities to fit your playstyle.

Its central pleasure is the sense that decisions can meaningfully alter events. That freedom has a cost: GameSpot notes that eliminating key characters can make some later story sequences feel bare. The game’s scale and complexity can also be daunting to newcomers; selected critic-review excerpts on Metacritic praise the game while acknowledging that potential barrier. Those excerpts are examples of critical response, not a timeless or exhaustive consensus.

How closely does Baldur’s Gate 3 follow D&D 5e?

It follows 5e as a foundation, not as a literal reproduction of a tabletop session. GameSpot describes a tactical system that borrows from fifth edition while making changes for a virtual setting. The difference matters: at a table, a group can ask a human Dungeon Master to interpret a plan, improvise a ruling, or reshape an encounter. In a computer RPG, the possibilities must be represented in software.

PC Gamer argues that the game can be faithful to D&D’s systems and spirit while differing from many tabletop groups in its rewards and style of play. That is not a contradiction. Fidelity to a rules framework does not guarantee that a video game will feel like every group’s campaign, where the Dungeon Master, players, and table conventions all shape what happens.

What does the adaptation change—and what does 5e constrain?

Larian CEO and Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke described the design tension in a Reddit AMA, as reported by GamesRadar+: “The game was based on 5e,” D&D’s fifth-edition rules, “which is a system that was made for tabletop, not for video games. Most of the limitations came from that.” The point is not that 5e prevents a good game; it is that rules built for a human-run table do not automatically map neatly onto a digital simulation.

GameSpot likewise says Larian took liberties to make 5e more approachable on screen. The adaptations are part of the design, not evidence that the game simply reproduces tabletop play. A computer can calculate rules and present tactical options consistently, but it cannot offer the same open-ended human interpretation that a group may bring to an unexpected idea. Conversely, software can support a large authored world, visual staging, and detailed consequences in ways that are particular to a video game.

That distinction also clarifies the title’s criticism. The game’s limits can come from the source rules, from the need to translate them into software, or from Larian’s own choices in shaping the experience. Those are related but not interchangeable explanations. PC Gamer’s discussion of rewards and play style, alongside GameSpot’s account of virtual adaptations, points to trade-offs rather than proof that D&D 5e is objectively bad.

Is Baldur’s Gate 3 a good D&D game?

Yes, if “good D&D game” means a compelling adaptation that uses 5e as a recognizable rules base and makes it work as a video game. Selected critics cited on Metacritic have called it an unusually successful and authentic adaptation, while also noting that its scale can challenge newcomers. That praise does not mean it duplicates tabletop play or resolves every tension between the two formats.

The more useful question is what kind of D&D experience you want. If you value tactical encounters, character choices, and a richly authored story, the game’s adaptation can be a strength. If you expect the boundless improvisation of a group guided by a human Dungeon Master, a computer game—however reactive—will necessarily offer a different kind of freedom.

Verdict: a masterpiece, but not proof that the tabletop game is bad

Baldur’s Gate 3 can be an exceptional RPG and still reveal shortcomings or friction in the system it adapts. Its achievement lies partly in making 5e legible and playable in a digital world while building a story with substantial branching and tactical choice. The evidence supports a nuanced verdict: the game is a major success, and its adaptation exposes real medium-specific constraints; it does not establish that D&D 5e is universally a bad tabletop game.
