Baldur’s Gate 3 is still a worthwhile PS5 game if its role-playing strengths matter more to you than perfectly consistent performance. The caveat is that the available evidence does not establish how the base PS5 handles every late-game scene on the current version: launch-era testing found demanding areas worth scrutiny, while later updates fixed specific problems without publishing new comparable frame-rate measurements.
Does Baldur’s Gate 3 run well on PS5?
The fairest answer is: well enough to enjoy, but not consistently enough to promise a flawless technical experience in every situation. Digital Foundry’s September 7, 2023 review assessed the launch version, examining image-quality and performance modes, CPU-heavy Act 3 scenes, and split-screen play. It described the PS5 version as effectively using PC Ultra settings. That is useful expert analysis of the launch build—not a benchmark of the current version.
A 2023 TechRadar report said the base PS5’s Performance mode targeted 60fps with dynamic resolution scaling and that the target largely held in its tested experience. “Target” matters: this does not establish a locked 60fps throughout the game, particularly in demanding late-game scenes.
What performance should you expect in Act 3 and split-screen?
Act 3 and couch co-op are the scenarios to think about most carefully. Digital Foundry’s launch-period assessment specifically looked at CPU-heavy Act 3 gameplay in both solo and split-screen play. Those findings explain why a player asking, “What is the PS5 split-screen Act 3 performance?” is asking about a meaningful stress case—not just ordinary exploration.

However, the launch review cannot tell you exactly how the current base-PS5 build performs there. Larian’s later hotfix notes document particular problems and fixes, not current average frame rates or a fresh, comparable test of Act 3 and split-screen. There is no established current figure here for those scenarios, so treat precise claims about their performance as unverified.
Which graphics mode should you choose?
On the standard PS5, the choice is between favoring motion and favoring image presentation. The 2023 report describes Performance mode as targeting 60fps through dynamic resolution scaling; that historical figure is not a guarantee for every location or the latest patch. If smoother motion matters most, Performance mode is the sensible starting point. If you prefer image quality and can accept a lower frame-rate target, choose Quality mode. The launch-era evidence does not justify promising that either mode will behave identically across every scene.
PS5 Pro figures are different and should not be applied to the standard console. In its November 7, 2024 announcement, Larian specified:
Rank #2
- 1205504
- High-quality material
- Durable
- robustness
| Console and mode | Resolution and frame-rate target |
|---|---|
| PS5 Pro Quality | Native 2160p (4K) at 30fps, according to Larian in 2024. |
| PS5 Pro Performance | 1440p upscaled to 2160p at 60fps using PSSR, according to Larian in 2024. |
Larian also said PS5 Pro split-screen offers a 30fps or 60fps target according to the selected mode. These are Pro-specific specifications, not evidence of equivalent performance on the base PS5.
What have later patches changed?
Baldur’s Gate 3 continued receiving updates after Patch 8, which Larian called its final major patch. The dated notes show that technical maintenance did not stop with that content update:
- May 14, 2025, Hotfix 31: addressed high-saturation visual artifacts that could appear when changing locations, often after teleporting by waypoint. Larian’s Hotfix 31 notes.
- November 20, 2025, Hotfix 35: fixed a PS5 freeze that could occur when pressing L2. Larian listed PS5 version 4.1.1.7023236. Larian’s Hotfix 35 notes.
- March 26, 2026, Hotfix 36: addressed performance issues introduced by an earlier small update that could trigger crashes. The listed fixes included a frame-rate drop followed by a crash when loading a save, as well as several other crashes. Larian said the hotfix addressed “these performance issues and some other crashes and blockers that were still affecting players.” Larian’s Hotfix 36 notes.
These notes establish that the named issues were addressed; they do not show that every technical issue has been eliminated or provide a current frame-rate profile for the base PS5. For the dated update record, see Larian’s official news and update index.

Is PS5 couch co-op good?
Patch 7 brought dynamic split-screen to PS5. In a PlayStation Blog post dated October 1, 2024, Larian’s Luke Karmali explained that the screen merges when players approach one another and splits again when they head off separately. That is a useful interface improvement for a co-op adventure: players do not have to remain in fixed halves of the screen when they are together.
The same patch introduced the in-game Mod Manager to console players. Dynamic split-screen changes how the co-op view behaves; it is not evidence that split-screen removes the extra technical demands of rendering two players’ perspectives.

Is the PS5 version worth playing?
If you want Baldur’s Gate 3 on console and can tolerate occasional rough edges, the evidence supports a qualified yes. It is a substantial turn-based RPG, and the launch-period technical assessment found a high-quality console presentation. But players who are especially sensitive to frame pacing should take the documented performance-related fixes seriously, particularly when considering dense Act 3 scenes or split-screen.
Buy or play it for the game, not on the assumption that every demanding scene will hold a particular frame rate. If comparing consoles, decide first whether you have the standard PS5 or PS5 Pro: only the Pro has the 2024 mode specifications listed above. Larian lists the game and Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Physical Deluxe editions on its official site; regional availability and stock for any physical edition can vary.
