BALL x PIT turns ricocheting projectiles into the heart of a single-player action roguelite: you descend into a monster-filled pit, fuse an unpredictable arsenal of balls, and bring resources back to build a city that strengthens future runs. The pleasure is in how those layers feed one another—not in a promised playtime figure.
What kind of game is BALL x PIT?
Developed by Kenny Sun and Friends and published by Devolver Digital, BALL x PIT launched on October 15, 2025. Steam calls it a “brick-breaking, ball-fusing, base-building survival roguelite”; Nintendo’s official description emphasizes the same blend of arcade-style ricochet combat and ongoing development. Its premise gives that loop a clear purpose: after Ballbylon is destroyed, a deep pit draws treasure hunters. You descend through increasingly difficult areas, fight advancing enemies with bouncing, magic-infused projectiles, gather resources, and work toward rebuilding New Ballbylon. It is not simply a run-based arcade game, nor a conventional base builder; the combat and the rebuilding are connected parts of the same progression.
How does the ball-fusion combat work?
You equip balls that ricochet through the battlefield, and combine randomized options to create different effects. Steam and Nintendo describe a pool of more than 60 balls and hundreds of possible outcomes. That breadth shifts the focus away from sticking to one fixed weapon: a run asks you to make something useful from the balls available and adapt your approach as the combination takes shape. The brick-breaking ancestry is visible in the way projectiles bounce, but enemies, magic effects, and changing combinations give those angles a combat purpose. A ricochet can reach targets in ways a direct shot cannot; the appeal comes from shaping a build around those opportunities while reacting to what is happening on screen. The result sits between Breakout-like pattern play and roguelite build-making rather than belonging neatly to either category.
What makes each descent different?
Randomized ball combinations
Because combinations emerge from what a run offers, experimentation is part of the moment-to-moment loop. One descent may encourage a different set of synergies and tactics from the next. The game’s stated scale—more than 60 balls and hundreds of outcomes—suggests a large design space, though it does not guarantee that every combination is equally effective.
Distinct characters
Recruitable heroes have distinct, upgradable mechanics that can change how a run plays. A character choice therefore adds another variable alongside the balls: the same general combat system can feel different depending on the abilities you bring into the pit. (Steam; Nintendo)

Regions, enemies, and bosses
Descents move through regions with different hazards, enemies, and bosses. Those differences give the combat more than a single target pattern to solve, and ask you to adjust a build to the place you are exploring rather than treating every run as an identical arena. (Steam; Nintendo)

Resources gathered in the pit support the rebuilding of New Ballbylon. The city can grow through more than 70 buildings, which provide bonuses and unlock power-ups, characters, and other options. That gives a failed or completed descent a route into longer-term progress: the next run can begin with a broader set of possibilities than the last. Homebound heroes can also be assigned automated resource tasks. (Steam; Nintendo)
This city-building layer is what makes the “rabbit hole” description fit. Combat encourages small-scale experimentation with bounces and ball synergies; the persistent systems invite you to think about unlocks, upgrades, and who to recruit over a longer arc. The game keeps one foot in immediate arcade action and the other in a growing collection of future choices.

Nintendo’s listing describes The Naturalist Update as the final free update, adding two characters, 11 balls, and five passives. How did the idea develop?
In a January 26, 2026 PlayStation Blog post, lead developer Kenny Sun traced the concept to trying the mobile game Punball in November 2021. He first made a turn-based prototype; playing Vampire Survivors in February 2022 prompted him to move toward real-time action. Looking back on that shift, Sun wrote: “I knew that the core of the game had something special, but as I continued to play it I felt that there were a number of elements I wished were different.” (PlayStation.Blog)
What do the early reception figures say?
Devolver Digital’s FY2025 announcement reported an 87 Metacritic score, a 96% “Overwhelmingly Positive” Steam user-review score, and more than 1 million Steam units sold in the first 10 weeks through the end of December 2025.
