It combines a single-player campaign with class-based multiplayer, large objective battles and Portal tools for custom community experiences. Before buying, check your platform and PC storefront requirements; the Phantom Edition adds cosmetic and progression extras, while the Standard Edition is the straightforward way to get the game.
What is Battlefield 6?
Battlefield 6 is a first-person shooter developed by Battlefield Studios, which EA identifies as Criterion, DICE, Motive and Ripple Effect. EA sets the single-player campaign in 2027: after a high-profile assassination destabilizes the world and several major European countries leave NATO, the private military corporation PAX ARMATA tries to fill the resulting power vacuum. This is the game’s fictional setup, not a description of real-world events.

EA’s launch announcement quoted Vince Zampella, then an EA executive vice president, saying, “Today’s launch is simply day one for Battlefield 6.” That was EA’s statement at launch, not a guarantee of any particular future content schedule.

Phantom is not required to play the game. EA’s offer details can vary by region, so check the purchase page for your location to confirm exactly what is included. The available information does not establish a current price for either edition.
What can you do in multiplayer?
Battlefield 6’s multiplayer spans large objective-focused battles, faster team modes and player-made experiences. EA’s multiplayer reveal listed the modes below; that list describes announced modes, not a promise that every mode is available at all times.
| Mode | What the name suggests about its focus |
|---|---|
| Conquest | Large-scale battles centered on capturing and holding objectives. |
| Breakthrough | Attack-and-defend fighting over successive objective areas. |
| Rush | Teams contest objectives in a focused attack-and-defense format. |
| Team Deathmatch | Team-versus-team combat focused on eliminations. |
| Squad Deathmatch | Elimination-based competition among squads. |
| Domination | A faster objective-control format. |
| King of the Hill | Teams fight to control a contested zone. |
| Escalation | A larger objective mode that changes as the battle progresses. |
These short descriptions explain the broad play-style distinction; they are not a substitute for checking each mode’s current rules in-game.

How do the four classes differ?
The class system returns with four roles: Assault, Recon, Support and Engineer. Choose based on how you want to contribute to a squad rather than assuming one class is necessary for every mode.
- Assault: A combat-forward role for players who want to press the attack.
- Recon: A role for spotting and engaging enemies at range.
- Support: A squad-focused role centered on helping teammates stay in the fight.
- Engineer: A role suited to taking on vehicles and battlefield equipment.
EA also highlights destruction, movement and weapon-mounting features. Together, these systems are part of the tactical layer: the environment can change, positioning matters, and a weapon can be mounted in appropriate situations.
What is Portal?
Portal provides tools for creating custom Community Experiences. Rather than being just another fixed match mode, it lets players shape their own experiences using the available tools. If you prefer unusual rules or player-created setups to standard playlists, Portal is a relevant part of the game to explore.

Do I need an EA Account to play Battlefield 6?
Yes. EA says an EA Account is required. For PC, make sure the account you use is correctly linked to the relevant storefront account before you try to play.
Do I need the EA app to play Battlefield 6?
Not in every PC setup. EA says Steam players do not need the EA app, but they still need an EA Account. Buying through Epic Games Store and accessing the game through EA Play Pro require the EA app. Check the current EA support guidance and the specific storefront’s requirements if your setup differs.
What should I know about online access?
EA’s buy terms say online play requires an internet connection and applicable accounts. They also state that online features may eventually be retired with notice. That means online access depends not only on your connection and account but also on EA continuing to operate the relevant services.
How to choose the right listing
- Choose your platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or PC.
- If buying on PC, choose a storefront: Steam, EA app or Epic Games Store, then confirm the EA Account and app requirements for that route.
- Choose an edition: Standard for the base game, or Phantom if its listed extras are worth it to you.
- Verify the product details: Check platform, edition, region and format on the exact listing. Do not assume a marketplace title or image confirms a disc, digital code, inventory status or regional contents.
EA’s July 31, 2025 multiplayer reveal framed the project around the series’ established strengths. Battlefield general manager Byron Beede said, “We knew when we set out to create the future of Battlefield, we had to nail the fundamentals of what players have loved about the series for more than 20 years.” That is EA’s description of its design intent; the practical fit depends on whether you want objective battles, class-based squad play or custom community experiences.
