In April 2025, a report about leaked Battlefield Labs code appeared to show matchmaking commands that could group players by similar skill. Lead producer David Sirland said skill was one matchmaking factor, but described ping and time to game as top priorities; he also said the team was not pursuing heavy-handed skill separation. Community manager T0TALfps warned that Labs features could change before release and that leaked material might lack context. The leak concerned a closed, unfinished test—not proof of Battlefield 6’s final matchmaking behavior.

What the April 2025 leak reportedly showed

On April 12, 2025, Insider Gaming reported that leaked internal code from Battlefield Labs appeared to contain matchmaking commands for grouping players with similar skill. That is a report’s interpretation of leaked code, not an official public technical specification or confirmation of the final game’s algorithm. Insider Gaming’s April 12 report described the code and reproduced remarks attributed to developers in a closed Battlefield Labs Discord.

GameSpot followed on April 16 with coverage of Sirland’s clarification and the uncertainty around whether test-build features would reach the game in the same form. Neither report establishes a published skill formula, numeric weighting, or selectable matchmaking mode. GameSpot’s April 16 report.

What David Sirland said about skill, ping, and match balance

Sirland, Battlefield 6’s lead producer, distinguished using skill as a factor from making skill separation the dominant matchmaking priority. In comments reproduced by Insider Gaming from the closed Labs Discord, he wrote: “What you really want to say is ‘Heavy SBMM where skill separation is a priority is bad’.”

He added that skill still mattered for balancing teams: “But that doesn’t make skill as a factor in matchmaking bad wholesale, on the contrary we need a skill value to make balanced teams – no matter the ranges of skills total on a server.”

Sirland also sought to distinguish the presence of a skill value from a strict system that sorts players primarily by skill: “Just to calm this thing down a tad – the fact a skill value is in the matchmaker (it’s been there since we started being able to matchmake BTW) – doesn’t mean we are going with a heavy handed SBMM solution.”

In the same exchange, he described ping and time to game as top priorities, with skill helping balance teams. Those are qualitative priorities, not a disclosed ranking or fixed weighting that applies to every playlist, region, or party. The reported remarks therefore support the narrower conclusion that skill could be considered, not that Battlefield 6 used strict skill-only matchmaking.

Why T0TALfps cautioned against treating Labs leaks as final

Community manager T0TALfps said Battlefield Labs was intended as a collaborative development program and warned that test features could change. As reproduced by Insider Gaming, T0TALfps said: “Battlefield Labs is about building and collaborating on the future of Battlefield, and we want to do that in the correct way. I want to remind everyone things that are taking place in Battlefield Labs may or may not make their way to the final finish line.”

The same response cautioned that leaked material could be taken out of context and said participants who continued to violate the program’s NDA could be removed. The point was not that the reported code was false, but that a fragment from a closed, unfinished test does not by itself establish how the released game would work.

Timeline: from Battlefield Labs to later matchmaking updates

  • February 3, 2025: EA announced Battlefield Labs as an invited community testing program for the next Battlefield title. The announcement said feedback would inform development and that initial tests would use servers in Europe and North America. Four studios were named: DICE, Ripple Effect, Motive, and Criterion. EA’s Battlefield Labs announcement.
  • April 12, 2025: Insider Gaming reported on code that appeared to suggest skill-aware matchmaking and reproduced Sirland’s and T0TALfps’s comments from the closed Labs Discord.
  • April 16, 2025: GameSpot separately covered Sirland’s explanation and the warning that Labs features were not guaranteed to ship unchanged.
  • August 21, 2025: After the Open Beta, EA said it was reviewing matchmaking using player feedback and in-game data, while acknowledging match-finding difficulties for some playlist objectives. The update did not publish a skill-weighting formula. EA’s Open Beta debrief.
  • July 30, 2026: EA discussed the ongoing balance between queue speed and match quality across regions, including concerns about bot-heavy lobbies. It outlined a Season 5 Server Browser, regular matchmaking backfill for official servers, and work toward more persistent match flow. These later live-service comments describe current service considerations, not the exact configuration of the April 2025 Labs build. EA’s July 2026 community update.

So, does Battlefield 6 have SBMM?

The April 2025 comments indicate that a skill value could be used in matchmaking, including to balance teams. They do not support the claim that EA confirmed strict SBMM, nor do they prove the released game’s precise behavior. Sirland’s distinction was between skill being a factor and heavy skill separation being a priority; his reported comments put ping and time to game among the top priorities.

EA’s later updates show that matchmaking continued to be considered in terms of queue speed, match quality, regional conditions, and match flow. They do not disclose a formula or establish that one factor always outweighs another in every mode. For the underlying exchange, see Insider Gaming and GameSpot.
