It includes both modes, but the review coverage available here is more positive about online play than the story. Whether it is worth picking up now depends on your platform, your interest in solo play, and whether you can find suitable servers.
What Battlefield 4 includes
Battlefield 4 has a single-player campaign and online multiplayer. EA describes the campaign as a squad’s effort to evacuate American VIPs from Shanghai and make its way home; that is the publisher’s synopsis, not an independent assessment. EA’s Battlefield 4 page and the Steam listing present both modes as core features.

How the campaign and multiplayer compare
Campaign
The campaign is the weaker part of the package in the review coverage surfaced here. Metacritic’s review excerpts include criticism of the single-player story, and GamesRadar’s retrospective also says the campaign has room for improvement. Those are critical perspectives, not a guarantee that every player will feel the same way. If you mainly want a compelling solo story, the evidence gives little reason to choose Battlefield 4 over a stronger campaign-focused game.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer draws more praise in the cited reviews. Metacritic’s excerpts highlight destruction and squad play; GamesRadar emphasizes the variety of multiplayer options and large-scale matches on consoles. That makes the online mode the stronger reason to play, especially if you enjoy team-based battles and large maps. The reviews describe the game’s design and their own assessments; they do not establish how easy it is to find a match today. Is Battlefield 4 worth playing now?
For a multiplayer-first player, it may be—provided the platform and region you plan to use have active servers that suit you. Current activity cannot be inferred reliably across all platforms and regions from the available evidence. A TechRadar writer reported seeing a few empty official PS4 servers in August 2026; that is one platform-specific observation, not proof that all PS4 servers, other platforms, or community servers are empty. Check live, platform-specific server listings before buying if finding matches is essential. TechRadar’s August 2026 retrospective provides that limited observation.
For someone who mainly wants a solo campaign, the case is weaker: the story is present, but the cited reviews are more critical of it than enthusiastic. If you are interested in both modes, treat the campaign as an additional option and multiplayer as the main draw rather than assuming the two are equally strong.

Platform, edition, and online requirements
EA links to Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox storefronts, while Steam lists the base game and Premium Edition. Confirm the current store listing for your platform and the exact content included; the available sources do not establish current prices or availability. On Steam, an EA account is required. Steam also notes that EA may retire online features after 30 days’ notice on its service-updates page, so online functionality is subject to change. EA’s platform links and the Steam listing are the relevant places to check.

Steam showed 83% positive from 29,521 English-language user reviews when its listing was observed on October 8, 2026. That is a time-sensitive storefront user-review figure, not a professional critic score and not evidence of current server population. It can offer a broad indication of how reviewers rated the game, but it should not replace checking whether the version and online experience you want are available now. Steam’s listing is where the figure can be rechecked.
