What Ubisoft announced
On March 22, 2025, the Assassin’s Creed account celebrated a 2 million-player milestone for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The game had launched on March 20. Ubisoft’s post said the game had “surpassed the launches of AC Origins and Odyssey,” but did not provide comparable sales totals or define the precise measurement behind “players.” Engadget reproduced Ubisoft’s announcement.

Does 2 million players mean 2 million copies sold?
No. Ubisoft reported 2 million players, not 2 million copies sold. The announcement does not break down how people accessed the game or state a unit-sales figure. Windows Central suggested the count may include Ubisoft+ subscribers, but Ubisoft did not disclose that breakdown. Windows Central’s report frames that possibility as an interpretation, not a confirmed explanation.
Which Assassin’s Creed launches did Shadows surpass?
Ubisoft named Origins and Odyssey. Its March statement does not say that Shadows surpassed every earlier Assassin’s Creed launch, and it does not establish a ranking by copies sold. The comparison should be kept to the company’s wording: the launch had surpassed those two games’ launches, measured by the player-count claim Ubisoft chose to announce.

How did Shadows perform later?
Ubisoft’s FY25 results, published in May 2025, provided separate follow-up context: players had logged 160 million hours in Shadows, and its player count and consumer spending had outperformed Odyssey. Those later measures do not revise the March 22 milestone or turn it into a sales figure. Ubisoft’s investor relations page hosts company financial results.

In March 2026, Ubisoft said Shadows was entering its final phase of support, with smaller and less frequent updates planned. Ubisoft’s June 16, 2026 article described that month’s release as the final major content drop; it said the new story arc and Domains feature were free. The game is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Ubisoft Store, Epic Games Store, Steam, and Macs with Apple silicon. Availability and update details may vary by platform.
