The figure was a player milestone—not a disclosed total of copies sold.
What Ubisoft announced
Before 4 p.m. in Canada on March 20, Ubisoft’s official Assassin’s Creed account announced that the game had passed 1 million players. PC Gamer and Gadgets 360 reported the announcement the following day; PC Gamer linked to the dated post.

Ubisoft’s wording was “players.” It did not announce that 1 million copies had been sold. The contemporaneous reports noted that a player count can include people accessing the game through Ubisoft+ as well as people who bought it. Ubisoft did not disclose a launch-day sales total in those reports.
What the milestone does—and does not—show
The announcement establishes that Ubisoft said more than 1 million people had played by that point on launch day. It does not establish how many copies were sold, how many players were unique across platforms, or how the game ranked against earlier entries by launch-day player count.

Those distinctions matter when comparing launch figures. A cumulative player count, copies sold, Day 1 revenue, and a platform-specific concurrent-player count measure different things. The one-million announcement is not a substitute for any of the other measures.

In its FY2024–25 results, published in May 2025, Ubisoft said Shadows delivered the second-highest Day 1 sales revenue in the franchise, behind Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Ubisoft also reported a record Day 1 performance on the PlayStation digital store. These are later company-reported commercial metrics; they do not change what the March 20 player milestone measured.
