It keeps Paladin’s Extra Attack and Aura of Protection while adding Sorcerer spell progression and Metamagic. It is not the only strong split: choose Paladin 5/Sorcerer 7 for more Sorcerer progression, or Paladin 7/Sorcerer 5 for a Paladin subclass feature at level 7.
Why Paladin 6/Sorcerer 6 is the balanced default
The game’s character-level cap is 12, and levels in each class are tracked separately. Every level spent on Sorcerer is a level not spent advancing Paladin, and vice versa. That makes the Paladin breakpoints important: Paladin 5 grants Extra Attack, while Paladin 6 grants Aura of Protection, which adds your Charisma modifier to saving throws for nearby allies. The 6/6 split reaches both and leaves six levels for Sorcerer progression. BG3 Wiki’s class overview and Paladin feature list outline the relevant rules.
Paladin supplies the martial foundation: weapon combat, armor options and Divine Smite. Sorcerer adds full-caster spell-slot progression and Metamagic, giving you more ways to shape spells and more spell-slot resources to spend on smites. Higher-level slots do not automatically teach or prepare higher-level spells; spell access depends on the spells your character can actually learn or prepare under the classes’ rules. The BG3 Wiki multiclassing guide explains the split between effective spellcaster level and class spell progression.
Which Sorcadin level split should you choose?
| Final split | What it reaches | What you give up | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paladin 6/Sorcerer 6 | Paladin Extra Attack and Aura of Protection; six Sorcerer levels | Compared with 5/7, one Sorcerer level; compared with 7/5, the Paladin level-7 subclass feature | A balanced melee and party-support hybrid |
| Paladin 5/Sorcerer 7 | Paladin Extra Attack and seven Sorcerer levels | Paladin’s level-6 Aura of Protection | More Sorcerer progression and spell options over the level-6 aura |
| Paladin 7/Sorcerer 5 | Paladin Extra Attack, Aura of Protection and the level-7 subclass feature | One Sorcerer level compared with 6/6, and two compared with 5/7 | A Paladin subclass feature matters more than additional Sorcerer progression |
These are preference-based trade-offs, not a proven damage ranking. The multiclassing guide and PC Gamer’s Patch 8 build coverage discuss Sorcadin splits as options with different priorities rather than a universally settled best answer.

How to level the balanced 6/6 build
- Start as a Paladin. For the martial-focused version, begin in Paladin so your early character is built around its armor and weapon setup.
- Reach Paladin level 5. This is the key early breakpoint for Extra Attack.
- Take Paladin level 6. This adds Aura of Protection and completes the Paladin side of the balanced split.
- Put the remaining six levels into Sorcerer. This gives you Sorcerer progression and Metamagic while preserving the Paladin features above.
The order prioritizes the build’s martial foundation and Paladin breakpoints. It does not prescribe exact spells, ability scores or a subclass ranking; those choices depend on how you want to play, and a definitive ranking is not established by the cited build coverage.
Choose subclasses for playstyle, not a universal ranking
Paladin oath and Sorcerer subclass choices shape the character’s style, but the available build comparisons do not establish one combination as the best for everyone. Patch 8 added the Oath of the Crown Paladin and Shadow Magic Sorcerer, expanding the options. Larian described Patch 8 as the game’s final major content patch. See Larian’s Patch 8 announcement for the additions. Earlier and current third-party builds also discuss other oaths; treat those as alternatives to consider, not a settled tier list. Hack the Minotaur’s Patch 8-updated Sorcadin guide is one such example.

What to consider before committing
- Party defense: If nearby allies benefit from stronger saving throws, Aura of Protection is the reason to prefer Paladin 6 over Paladin 5.
- More Sorcerer progression: Choose Paladin 5/Sorcerer 7 if an extra Sorcerer level matters more to you than the aura.
- Subclass feature: Choose Paladin 7/Sorcerer 5 if your Paladin oath’s level-7 feature is the priority.
- Resource choices: Sorcerer spell slots can support more opportunities to use Divine Smite, but spending them on smites competes with using them for spells.
- Build complexity: A hybrid asks you to make more decisions about melee, ranged options, spells and resources than a single-class character. The build also has to manage the demands of more than one ability score; the Sorcadin guide flags this as part of the hybrid’s trade-off.
Multiclassing rules and respecs in BG3
Baldur’s Gate 3 does not require ability-score prerequisites to multiclass. Larian’s Community Update #21 put the system plainly: “Each level, you’ll have the option to choose a different class to spend points on and begin building a bespoke Multiclass character.” Read the official multiclassing announcement for the original description. The game also lets you respec class choices early in the adventure through an NPC, so you can revise your class progression if you decide a different split fits better. For exact mechanics, use BG3-specific rules rather than assuming tabletop rules apply unchanged.
