The Insider Gaming guide ranks the XM4 first among Black Ops 6 assault rifles and recommends a five-attachment XM4 build. That is the guide’s ranking—not a verified current meta verdict. Treyarch later adjusted the AK-74, and the available sources do not establish a definitive October 2026 winner for standard multiplayer or ranked play.
Insider Gaming’s Black Ops 6 assault rifle ranking
The following order is the ranking published by Insider Gaming. Its author says the list draws on WZRanked statistics and the team’s experience; it should be read as that guide’s snapshot, not an official or universally accepted ranking.

The guide characterizes the XM4 as a reliable all-rounder and says its immediate availability contributes to its high usage. It describes the AK-74 as hard-hitting but difficult to control, the AS Val as exceptionally fast-firing with a smaller default magazine, and the AMES 85 and Model L as better suited to longer-range engagements. These are the guide author’s assessments, not a current, independent weapon test.

The guide’s accompanying class setup is Ghost, Gung-Ho, and Bankroll as perks; Dexterity through Perk Greed; Perk Greed as the Wildcard; Semtex as the lethal; Stim Shot as the tactical; and Trophy System as the Field Upgrade. Treat the names and combination as the guide’s recommendation and check the current in-game labels and availability when setting up a class.
Why the ranking needs a patch and mode check
The Insider Gaming page does not provide a publication timestamp in the material available here. More importantly, Treyarch’s September 3, 2025 patch notes document a later AK-74 change. Treyarch said the rifle was intended to fill a high-damage, slower-handling role and that it had fallen toward the lower end of the assault-rifle class in its data before the adjustment.

The patch raised the AK-74’s close-range maximum damage from 27 to 29, while shortening the maximum-damage range from 0–40.6m to 0–11.4m. Those are historical balance values from that update; they do not establish how the weapon performs after any later changes.
Third-party rankings also disagree. CODMunity’s tier list, displaying an October 10, 2025 update, names Merrick 556, KRIG C, and FFAR 1 as picks. Its separate Black Ops 6 overview uses a different order and presents time-to-kill figures. Those lists should not be merged with Insider Gaming’s order: their mode, build, date, and measurement basis need to match before comparisons are meaningful. The available sources do not verify a definitive October 2026 standard-multiplayer or ranked-play winner.

How to check whether the XM4 build works for you
Attachment balance is a choice between the qualities that matter in your mode and play style, rather than proof of a universal best setup. Compare recoil control, effective range, handling, and mobility in the situations where you expect to use the rifle.
- Open the XM4’s Gunsmith and check the currently available attachment names and effects against the guide’s listed build.
- If you want to try more attachments, the official Black Ops 6 weapon overview says the Gunfighter Wildcard grants three extra attachment points for a primary weapon.
- Test the setup in the Firing Range. The official Season 01 overview describes a range with updated weapon statistics, a Recoil Wall, and a Moving Target.
- Compare how controllable the rifle feels and how quickly you can aim and move at the ranges relevant to your mode. Adjust one attachment at a time so you can tell what changed.
A build that feels strong in a stationary firing check may not suit every map, engagement distance, or mode. Use the range to assess the weapon, then judge it in the kind of matches you actually play.
