The best first Five Nights at Freddy’s game for most newcomers is the original: it establishes the series’ camera-monitoring and limited-power survival format. After that, play the core story-driven entries in release order if you want to follow the series as it unfolds. Prefer a different style? Help Wanted is a mix of classic and new minigames, Security Breach focuses on exploration and evasion, and Help Wanted 2 offers another minigame collection.
What “mainline” means in this guide
The official storefronts do not define a formal mainline list. Here, “mainline” means the core story-driven games, rather than challenge collections, mobile releases, crossovers, or other side-format titles. Because players may mean different things by “best FNAF games,” the recommendations below focus on what each game offers—not an objective best-to-worst ranking.
Which Five Nights at Freddy’s game should you play first?
Start with the original for the classic survival loop
The original Five Nights at Freddy’s puts you in a small security office. You monitor cameras and manage limited electricity while trying to survive your shift. It is the clearest introduction to the recognizable format that defines the early games. Xbox’s US storefront lists the original as a single-player game and also offers a bundle grouping games 1–4; Nintendo’s US listing gives the Switch version a November 29, 2019 release date and says it is compatible with Switch 2. Play in release order for the core story
If your goal is to follow the core entries as they were released, begin with the original and continue through the early games before moving on to later releases. An Xbox listing groups the first four games together, which is a useful starting point for finding those entries, but it does not establish an official, complete canon list. Release order is a straightforward way to experience the series; it is not a guarantee that every detail will feel simple or self-contained.

Choose Help Wanted for minigames, with or without a headset
Help Wanted brings together classic and original minigames, including remade scenes from the first four games and Sister Location. Steam says the game supports both flat-screen and VR play and states, “A VR headset is NOT required to play.” Its Steam release date is May 28, 2019. Choose Security Breach for active exploration
Security Breach moves away from the original’s office-bound setup. Its PlayStation description follows Gregory through the Mega Pizzaplex and highlights using cameras, planning routes, creating distractions, hiding, and running from pursuers. That makes it the clearest pick here if you want to move through a space and evade threats rather than mainly manage a fixed position. Choose Help Wanted 2 for a later collection of activities
Help Wanted 2 is a sequel to Help Wanted, not another name for it. Steam dates its release to December 14, 2023, and describes Pizzaplex maintenance and management minigames alongside VR recreations of classic Sister Location experiences. Those details make it a reasonable pick if you already know you want a newer minigame collection; they do not establish that the whole game requires a VR headset. Help Wanted 2 on Steam
What order should you play the FNAF games in?
- Begin with Five Nights at Freddy’s. It introduces the series’ core office-survival format.
- Continue through the early core entries in release order. The Xbox US storefront groups games 1–4 in its Original Series bundle listing; check the exact listing for the edition and platform you plan to use.
- Branch to the format you want. Try Help Wanted for minigames, Security Breach for exploration and evasion, or Help Wanted 2 for another collection of activities.
This is a practical playing order, not a claim that storefronts publish a definitive canon sequence. If you want to follow the core story, playing core entries in release order is the least ambiguous starting approach; if you mainly want a particular style, you can choose by format instead.

Which Five Nights at Freddy’s games are VR?
Help Wanted is the clearest VR option in the listings cited here, but it also supports flat-screen play; Steam explicitly says a headset is not required. Help Wanted 2 includes described VR recreations, but the cited Steam information does not establish that the entire game requires VR. The available details here do not establish VR support for the other games in this guide. Check the exact platform edition and its store page before buying, especially if headset compatibility is a deciding factor.
What about newer FNAF games?
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic is a newer story-rich entry, released on Steam on June 13, 2025. Its listing describes a prototype endoskeleton that can adapt to costumes.
