For the widest mix of sports and casual group play, choose Nintendo Switch Sports. For a tennis-centered game with a story campaign, choose Mario Tennis Aces; for golf with several distinct ways to play, choose Mario Golf: Super Rush. “Best of all time” is a matter of fit, not an objective ranking: these picks weigh sport variety, mode depth, local and online options, motion controls, and solo content. The feature and player-count details below come from Nintendo’s US store listings, not comparative review scores or a measure of current online activity.

Best Nintendo Switch sports games at a glance

Game Best fit Standout features Player support listed by Nintendo
Nintendo Switch Sports Variety and casual group play Eight sports; Joy-Con motion controls; Soccer Leg Strap support One to four players on one system; one to two online. Local and online options vary by sport and configuration.
Mario Tennis Aces Tennis with a story mode Adventure mode, missions, boss battles, and Tournament mode Up to four players locally or online; singles and doubles.
Mario Golf: Super Rush Golf with varied formats Standard Golf, Speed Golf, Golf Adventure, Battle Golf, Solo Challenge, and Target Golf One to four on one system; two to four local wireless; two to four online.
Tennis A smaller, straightforward tennis option Rally Challenge, Tournament, Custom Play, Quick Play; published by D3PUBLISHER One to two players on one system.

Nintendo’s supported-player specifications describe what each game allows, not how many people are currently playing online. Online features may require a Nintendo Switch Online membership; check the relevant Nintendo listing for terms.

Which game should you choose?

Choose Nintendo Switch Sports for the broadest mix

Nintendo lists Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, Chambara (swordplay), Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, and Golf. All use Joy-Con motion controls. The single-system listing supports one to four players, while the online listing supports one to two; available play depends on the sport and player configuration. Nintendo specifically notes that players can team up on one system in team sports including Basketball, Volleyball, and Tennis.

The physical edition includes a Leg Strap for Soccer. Nintendo describes the digital edition as lower priced and says the Leg Strap can be purchased separately, so check the edition and accessory details before buying. Nintendo’s product description calls it “a sports collection that will get the whole family moving.”

Choose Mario Tennis Aces for tennis and a campaign

Mario Tennis Aces pairs tennis matches with Adventure mode, which Nintendo describes as including missions and boss battles. It also has Tournament mode, simple motion controls, and singles or doubles play for up to four players locally or online. Nintendo’s listing gives a June 22, 2018, release date.

This is the tennis pick when solo content matters alongside multiplayer. The official feature listing establishes its modes and supported play options, but does not establish how active online matchmaking is today.

Consider Tennis for a simpler tennis alternative

Nintendo’s listing for Tennis names D3PUBLISHER as the publisher and lists eight characters, six courts, Rally Challenge, Tournament, Custom Play, and Quick Play. It supports one to two players on a single system and has a January 25, 2018, release date. The available feature information does not establish that it is better or worse than Mario Tennis Aces; choose based on the modes and presentation you want.

How the multiplayer options differ

“Local multiplayer” can mean playing together on one console or connecting separate consoles through local wireless. Those are not interchangeable, so use the configuration that matches your group.

  • One-system play: Nintendo lists up to four players for Nintendo Switch Sports and Mario Golf: Super Rush. Mario Tennis Aces supports up to four locally; Tennis supports up to two on one system.
  • Local wireless: Nintendo lists two to four players for Mario Golf: Super Rush. Its listing also specifies local wireless for two to four players for Mario Tennis Aces.
  • Online: Nintendo lists one to two players for Nintendo Switch Sports, two to four for Mario Golf: Super Rush, and up to four for Mario Tennis Aces. The listings do not establish current matchmaking population.

For Nintendo Switch Sports, sport and player configuration affect which local or online options are available. Check Nintendo’s listing for the sport you plan to play rather than assuming every mode supports every setup.

What “best” means in this list

These games serve different purposes, so the recommendations are organized by what you want to play rather than a single numerical score. Nintendo Switch Sports stands out for the number of sports in one collection; Mario Tennis Aces combines tennis with a named story mode; Mario Golf: Super Rush offers several formats within golf. Nintendo’s product pages document features and player support, but do not provide a comparable review-score set, sales ranking, or evidence for an all-time consensus winner.

Nintendo Switch Sports Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
  • Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
  • Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
  • Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
  • Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online

Motion controls may suit players who enjoy gesture-based input, but that alone does not determine whether a game is accessible or comfortable for a particular person. Nintendo documents motion play for Nintendo Switch Sports and motion or button controls for Mario Golf: Super Rush; check each game’s control details against your needs.

Platform and regional note

This list covers games for Nintendo Switch, using US Nintendo store listings for the stated product details. Nintendo identifies Mario Tennis Fever as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive with a listed release date of February 12, 2026, so it is not included as a Nintendo Switch recommendation. Store details and availability can vary by region.
