If F.E.A.R. is already in your Steam Library, install it from there; you do not need the original disc. If you have only a printed retail CD key, try Steam’s official F.E.A.R. support route, but do not assume the old key will still redeem. If it cannot be used, GOG sells a separate digital edition of F.E.A.R. Platinum that does not require activation or an online connection to play.
First check whether F.E.A.R. is already on your Steam account
A printed key and a game in your account library are not the same thing. Sign in to the Steam account you may have used when the game was originally activated and look for F.E.A.R. in your Library. If it is there, select it and choose Install. Steam’s general instructions for installing a game from a disc explain that a retail Steam game must be activated on an account for the account-library download path; they do not guarantee that any particular old F.E.A.R. key can be activated today. If you have only a retail CD key, check it with Steam Support
Open Steam Support’s F.E.A.R. support page and choose “I’m having trouble with my retail CD key.” This is the official route for a key that is rejected or whose status is unclear. Whether an old key can be redeemed depends on that specific key and account; the support page does not promise that every retail key remains valid. Avoid key generators, unofficial key sellers, disc-image downloads, and “no-CD” executable patches: they are not legitimate ways to establish ownership or install the game safely.
If the key does not work, choose a separate digital edition
GOG currently lists F.E.A.R. Platinum, which includes the original F.E.A.R., F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, and F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate. GOG says this edition requires no activation or online connection to play. Buying it gives you a separate digital license; it does not recover, validate, or activate the retail key you already have. Steam also lists F.E.A.R., but its product page does not make the same no-activation statement, so do not assume the two storefront editions have identical requirements.

If a digital installation still asks for the CD
GOG’s general support article for games that ask for a CD suggests checking administrator privileges and trying to launch the game as an administrator, then contacting support if the prompt continues. This is general GOG advice, not a verified F.E.A.R.-specific fix. See GOG Support: Game asks for CD.

Steam’s current F.E.A.R. listing names Windows and 17 GB of free drive space. The game’s historical minimum operating-system requirements reflect the Windows versions of its original release, while Steam separately notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. Those are different requirements: the client’s supported Windows version is not a new statement of the game’s original minimum specification. Steam also says F.E.A.R.’s multiplayer component is no longer available; its listing describes the game as single-player. See the F.E.A.R. Steam listing.
