They suit different players: a single-player manor mystery, supernatural isolation on an oil rig, and horror designed around playing with friends. This is a practical comparison, not an objective ranking.

Which 2024 horror game should you choose?
Choose Alone in the Dark for a solo mystery
The Xbox Store lists Alone in the Dark as optimized for Xbox Series X|S and gives its release date as March 20, 2024. Its Louisiana manor setting, psychological and survival-horror framing, and two playable protagonists make it the clearest choice here if you want a self-contained single-player story. The Store says Emily Hartwood and Edward Carnby each have a story, inviting two playthroughs. Check the Xbox Store listing for editions and current availability.

Choose Still Wakes the Deep for a confined, isolated setting
Its central image is a North Sea oil rig being consumed by a supernatural entity. That premise makes it the shortlist’s setting-first option: the threat and the isolation are closely bound to the rig. Xbox Wire announced day-one Game Pass availability, but that launch announcement is not evidence that the game is still included in the subscription catalog. Check the current catalog before relying on subscription access. Xbox Wire’s original roundup.
Choose The Outlast Trials to play with friends
Xbox Wire singled out the opportunity to play The Outlast Trials with friends in a corporate-controlled sanatorium. That makes it the cooperative-oriented pick among these three, although the cited announcement does not establish a player count or spell out its modes. See the Xbox Wire roundup for the original description.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore Derceto Manor in this reimagination of Alone in the Dark, a love letter to the 90’s cult classic horror game
- Return to the roots of psychological horror and experience an atmospheric journey worthy of the game that started the genre
- Dive into a world full of sounds that make your skin crawl with a haunting, yet mesmerizing doom jazz soundtrack
- Enjoy the thrill of desperate survival in a world where reality starts to crumble, evil lurks in every shadow and ammunition is scarce
- Experience this nightmare from either Emily Hartwood’s or Edward Carnby’s perspective and unearth the dark secrets of a gothic mansion
What counts as a 2024 Xbox horror release?
The year in a game’s title or remake history is not the same as its release year on a particular console. Silent Hill 2 is a 2024 remake, but Konami announced its Xbox Series X|S availability later; it should not be counted as a 2024 Xbox release. Konami’s Xbox availability announcement supports that distinction.
Xbox Wire’s January 31, 2024 article also previewed Little Nightmares III as an anticipated horror release. That early-year preview alone does not establish that it ultimately released on Xbox Series X|S during 2024, so it is not included in this confirmed shortlist. The roundup is a helpful selection, not a complete census of every horror game released that year.
