For a five-year-old who is new to games, Super Mario Bros. Wonder has the clearest beginner-friendly support documented here: children can choose damage-immune Yoshi or Nabbit, and up to four people can play on one Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a racing alternative for a child drawn to competition. Neither age rating guarantees a good fit; consider the child’s interests, comfort with cartoon conflict, and ability to manage the game.
Two Switch games to consider
These are two evidence-backed starting points, not a ranked list of every suitable Switch game. The ESRB ratings below apply to the United States and Canada listings. For other regions, consult the local rating system.

Why Super Mario Bros. Wonder may suit a new player
Its strongest documented advantage for younger or newer players is the choice of Yoshi or Nabbit. The ESRB parent guide explains that these characters do not take damage, making levels easier to explore and some challenging platforming sections easier to complete. The guide also says a second player can bring someone back after a lost life, and that up to four people can play on one console. These supports can make family play more forgiving, but they do not remove the need to jump, move through levels, or face fantasy encounters.
The E rating should not be read as “no conflict.” The ESRB describes Mild Fantasy Violence, including jumping on enemies, throwing objects, small fireballs, and boss battles. Consider whether that kind of cartoon combat is comfortable for your child.

The ESRB parent guide confirms physical and digital availability for Switch. It also flags in-game purchases, so review the game and the account’s purchase settings before play. The guide’s quoted $59.99 price is historical and should not be treated as a current price.
When Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the better match
Choose this as the alternative if the child is more excited by racing and competition than by platforming. Its E rating comes with the Comic Mischief descriptor; the ESRB summary mentions whimsical attacks on opponents, cartoon explosions, dizzy effects, and cartoon bomb attacks. The rating does not establish how easy the game will be for a particular five-year-old. The sources cited here also do not verify specific assist features or make a claim about same-console play, so check the current game details if those matter to your decision.

How to choose for your child
- Check your region’s rating. Read the age category and content descriptors together. Nintendo advises parents to use the software rating system for their country; the linked ESRB listings are for the United States and Canada context.
- Match the activity to the child. Wonder involves platforming and fantasy encounters, with damage-immune character choices. Mario Kart is competitive racing with cartoon attacks. The available evidence does not support a universal developmental ranking between them.
- Decide whether playing together matters. The ESRB parent guide documents up to four players on one Switch for Wonder. No equivalent co-play claim is made here for Mario Kart.
- Review purchase and communication settings. Wonder is flagged for in-game purchases. Nintendo Switch parental controls include rating-based software restrictions and limits on communication; Nintendo also documents play-time limits and gameplay history in its parent information. Check Nintendo’s current instructions because menus and features can change.
