For arcade originals you can play on Wii U, start with Pac-Man, Xevious, Galaga, Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. This list ranks arcade-origin games released on Wii U Virtual Console; it does not mix them with newer Wii U games that merely use short, score-driven arcade-style play. The order is an editorial selection, not a published review consensus. Availability varied by region, and new Wii U eShop purchases have ended.
What counts as a Wii U arcade game?
“Arcade game” can mean an original coin-op game later released on Wii U, or a Wii U game designed around quick rounds and high scores. These are different categories. This ranking focuses on arcade-origin titles listed for Wii U Virtual Console, so the games below are classic arcade releases rather than a survey of every arcade-style Wii U game. Nintendo Life’s catalog separates “Virtual Console Arcade” from “Arcade,” illustrating why the distinction matters: Nintendo Life’s Wii U eShop catalog.
The best arcade-origin Wii U games
The ranking favors enduring play, distinctive mechanics and how naturally each game suits short sessions. These are editorial judgments; the available catalog and platform sources do not establish comparative review scores.
1. Pac-Man
Pac-Man is the best all-around starting point: its maze-and-chase loop is immediately legible, but mastering routes and timing keeps each run engaging. It is a strong fit for quick solo sessions and for introducing classic arcade design to a new player. Its appeal here is the original arcade game itself, not a claim that the Wii U release improves on every other version.

#1 Best Overall
- Watch video screens as you frantically shoot down waves of attacking robots
- Defend your facility from the evil (but cute) forces of Andross
- Create your own waves of attacking enemies and share them with friends
- Level up to unlock more missions and special cameras
2. Donkey Kong
The original Donkey Kong turns a small set of moves and hazards into a compact platform challenge. Its stages reward learning patterns and precise timing, giving it a steeper, more deliberate feel than Pac-Man. Choose it if you want arcade action built around platforming rather than a maze.
3. Galaga
Galaga is the pick for straightforward shooting and escalating pressure. Its fixed-screen format makes it easy to understand, while enemy formations and the risk of losing a captured fighter add tactical choices to a run. It works especially well when the aim is a focused score-chasing session.
Rank #2
4. Xevious
Xevious adds a useful wrinkle to the vertical-shooter formula: players attack airborne enemies and ground targets, so aiming and positioning matter in different ways. That extra layer makes it a rewarding choice for players who want more to manage than firing forward, though it can take longer to learn than Galaga.
5. Mario Bros.
The original Mario Bros. is a different experience from the later side-scrolling platformers: players clear enemies from a shared arena by flipping them from below and knocking them away. Its local two-player format makes it a natural choice for competing or cooperating on the same screen, if the specific regional release and its supported controls suit your setup.

How the Wii U changes the experience
Nintendo says Wii U Virtual Console games support Off-TV Play on the GamePad, so you can play without using the television, and let you create a restore point at any time. Those features are useful for short sessions and for returning to a difficult section, though a restore point is a convenience rather than a change to a game’s original design. See Nintendo’s Wii U Virtual Console information.
A Wii U Pro Controller is optional, not a general requirement for these games. Check the control options for the individual title and region before choosing a controller; the platform feature page does not establish that one controller is best for every release.

- Includes Replacement Wii U Console.
Which games were available in your region?
Virtual Console catalogs were not identical everywhere. The North American catalog lists Pac-Man, Xevious, Galaga, Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. among Wii U releases. The PAL catalog includes region-specific entries such as Salamander, Battle Lode Runner and Battle Chopper. Those lists are reference catalogs, not Nintendo rankings, and a listing in one territory does not prove availability in another. Consult the region-specific catalogs if checking a particular title: North American Wii U Virtual Console list and PAL Wii U Virtual Console list.

No. Nintendo ended Wii U eShop purchases on March 27, 2023, at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Nintendo says previously purchased games and DLC remain available to redownload “for the foreseeable future,” and software updates remain available. Online play and other Wii U functions that use online communication ended on April 8, 2024. See Nintendo’s eShop discontinuation Q&A for the current support details. The end of new digital purchases does not establish what used physical copies or consoles are available now; check the game’s format and your region before seeking a copy.
