If you can’t unlink a PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, or other platform account from the Activision account you use for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, the reason may be Activision’s once-every-12-month limit, an account restriction, or an access or technical problem. Activision’s instructions are to unlink through Account Linking; they do not promise that Support can override the limit. First identify what is blocking you, then use the matching route below.
How to unlink a platform account
- Sign in to your Activision account at Activision.
- Open Account Linking.
- Find the platform account you want to remove and select Unlink.
- Check the confirmation box and continue.
Activision says an individual platform account may be unlinked from an Activision account once every 12 months. The restriction applies to the individual platform account; the public instructions do not promise an exception if you have already used the unlink option within that period. See Activision’s Managing Your Activision Account guidance for the current steps and policy.
Why the unlink request may fail
Activision identifies two account-related reasons a request may be limited or denied: an active enforcement may restrict unlinking, and suspicious login or unlinking attempts may lead to denial. Its public guidance does not show the status of an individual account or provide a full error-message diagnostic, so an error alone may not tell you which condition applies.
- A cooldown or ineligible message: Check whether you have already unlinked that platform account during the previous 12 months.
- A denied request or missing option: Active enforcement or suspicious activity may affect eligibility. The public instructions do not establish a browser workaround or guarantee a manual override.
- A password or email-access problem: Use the linked-platform sign-in route below rather than treating the problem as a cooldown.
- A suspected account compromise: Use Activision’s hacked-account recovery process, not the routine unlink steps alone.
If you can’t access your Activision password or email
If a platform account is already linked to your Activision account, Activision says you can sign in using that platform account and then follow its account-management instructions to reset your password or change your email address. Its guidance also cautions that Support may be unable to change account details for privacy and security reasons. Follow the credential steps in Activision’s account-management article.

If you think your account was hacked
Use Activision’s Hacked Account Recovery process if someone took over or changed your account. Activision distinguishes hacked-account recovery from ordinary account linking and unlinking questions, which it routes to account management or Support Options. The recovery process requires a previously linked platform account and may involve creating a temporary Activision account. Activision warns not to make in-game purchases on that temporary account: it will no longer be accessible after recovery, and progress and purchases cannot be transferred.
What unlinking means for Modern Warfare II progress
In games with cross-progression, Activision says progress is stored on the Activision account, not the platform account. If you link a platform account to a different Activision account, your progress will not carry over to that other account. Activision says progress and content are not lost; relinking the platform account to its original Activision account restores access to that progression and owned content. Check which Activision account holds your progress before changing links.

When to contact support
If the official steps do not fit what you see, go to Activision Support Options and describe the exact error, which platform account you are trying to unlink, whether you can access the Activision account, and whether you suspect a compromise. Activision’s public guidance does not promise a manual cooldown override or a response time for routine unlink requests.
For a Blizzard account, installation, patch, or Blizzard Store purchase issue, Blizzard Support may be relevant; a 2020 Blizzard forum response directed Call of Duty or Activision account problems to Activision Support. That forum post is historical routing context, not a statement of current policy.
