Call of Duty HQ’s earlier shared-install setup could make MWIII-labelled content appear to MWII and Warzone players, but that did not mean every player was required to install the full MWIII game. Activision later changed the arrangement: MWII and MWIII became standalone downloads, and legacy content for those titles was scheduled to leave the main Call of Duty installation on August 7, 2025. If an unwanted download appears now, use the game’s content-management controls and check the guidance for your platform.
Why did Call of Duty HQ show MWIII content to MWII or Warzone players?
Call of Duty HQ was designed as a shared launch point for Modern Warfare III, Modern Warfare II, and Warzone. In its November 2023 explanation, Activision described game modes as content players could download or remove to manage storage. That shared setup helps explain why an MWII or Warzone player might see an MWIII-labelled item or download prompt in HQ.

A shared launcher update and a game-specific content pack are not necessarily the same thing as installing the complete MWIII game. The label alone does not establish what the queued download contains, whether it is required for the mode you want, or whether the same behavior occurred on every platform. What changed for MWII, MWIII, and Warzone?
In a July 2025 announcement, Activision said MWII and MWIII would be available as standalone downloads. It also said legacy content related to those games’ modes would be removed from the main Call of Duty installation on August 7, 2025. Activision stated that Warzone operators and weapons would not be affected by the separation.

- Call of Duty: Modern Wafare II PS5
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the sequel to 2019’s blockbuster Modern Warfare.
- Featuring the return of the iconic, team leader Captain John Price, the fearless John "Soap" MacTavish, the seasoned Sergeant Kyle "Gaz” Garrick, and the lone wolf himself, fan favorite Simon “Ghost” Riley, players will witness what makes Task Force 141 the legendary squad it is today.
- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription
That announcement changes how to interpret the older complaint: the shared-install arrangement was real, but it is not a reliable description of the current download structure. The statement about operators and weapons does not guarantee that every older Warzone mode or content pack remains installed. See Activision’s 2025 announcement for the change.
How to remove an unwanted download or manage game content
Activision’s general guidance is to manage or uninstall games and modes through Call of Duty’s content-management system, or use the available management controls for the relevant Call of Duty tile. Menu names and steps can differ between PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, and Steam, so there is no single button sequence that applies to every installation.

- Identify what is queued. Check whether the prompt names a full game, a mode, a content pack, or an update before removing anything.
- Open the relevant Call of Duty tile or in-game content-management screen. Use the controls offered for that title and platform, such as Manage Files, Install, or Uninstall when available.
- Remove only content you do not need. Keep the packs required for the game or mode you intend to play; removing a required pack can make that content unavailable until it is installed again.
- If the prompt persists, consult Activision Support for your platform and install state. The available steps can vary, and Activision’s general guidance does not establish one universal recovery sequence for every launcher.

Activision’s 2025 announcement separated MWII and MWIII into standalone downloads and said Warzone operators and weapons would not be impacted. That supports treating Warzone and MWIII as distinct download choices, but it does not establish that every legacy Warzone mode or pack is present on every platform. Check the content-management screen for the Warzone content you want rather than assuming an MWIII-labelled item is required—or safe to remove—based on its name alone.

Why installation-size claims can be misleading
Call of Duty’s total install varies with the games, modes, content packs, and language files selected. In its August 2024 roadmap, Activision cautioned that combined installation figures included full game installations, relevant packs, and all localized languages, and were not representative of a typical player’s installation. There is therefore no single figure in that announcement that should be treated as the normal storage requirement for an MWII or Warzone player. See Activision’s Call of Duty experience roadmap.
