If a Borderlands SHiFT code is rejected—or a reward seems to be missing—first check that the code matches the game, then confirm you are signed in to the right SHiFT account and used an official redemption route. Service interruptions can also affect redemption. For Borderlands 3 Golden Keys specifically, Gearbox says to collect the reward from the in-game mailbox after redeeming.
1. Check that the code and reward match your game
SHiFT codes and rewards are not necessarily interchangeable between Borderlands games. Gearbox Entertainment Support explicitly notes that Borderlands 2 Golden Keys cannot be used in Borderlands 3. Check the offer’s stated game and terms before trying the code again; do not assume a code transfers between titles or editions. Gearbox’s Golden Key guide explains the documented incompatibility.

If the game is correct but the code is still rejected, the available information cannot establish whether that specific code has expired, was already redeemed, or has region, platform, edition, or other offer restrictions. Check the promotion’s terms or contact Gearbox Support with the code and error details.
2. Verify the SHiFT account and choose a redemption route
Gearbox says online code redemption requires a free SHiFT account. Sign in to the account where you expect the reward to appear. Gearbox documents two ways to enter a code: the official SHiFT Rewards page and the game’s SHiFT interface. These are alternative entry points, not different types of code.

| Route | Use it when | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Official SHiFT Rewards page | You can sign in to the web account and want to redeem outside the game. | Make sure the signed-in SHiFT account is the one linked to the profile where you expect the reward. |
| In-game SHiFT interface | The game is available and its SHiFT menu lets you enter the code. | Confirm the game is using the intended SHiFT account before submitting. |
Gearbox’s Golden Key instructions describe both redemption routes. If one route is unavailable, try the other after checking that it is connected to the correct account.
3. Check whether SHiFT redemption is available
Service interruptions can affect SHiFT and in-game reward redemption. Check Gearbox’s SHiFT status updates for current information before repeatedly submitting a code. A dated maintenance notice on a status page is not evidence of a current outage; use the latest status information instead.

4. Look in the destination for that reward
For Borderlands 3 Golden Keys, redemption and collection are separate steps: after redeeming, load Borderlands 3 and check the in-game mailbox. Gearbox documents that destination in its Golden Key guide. Do not assume every Borderlands game or every kind of SHiFT reward uses the same mailbox; check the offer’s instructions for other rewards.
