CODEX announced its retirement in February 2022, in release notes accompanying The Sims 4: My Wedding Stories. The group said it had achieved its original goal of competing with RELOADED and was ready to move on. Contemporary reporting described CODEX as prolific, but did not establish that it was objectively the largest game-cracking group.
What happened to CODEX?
On February 24, 2022, TorrentFreak reported that CODEX had announced its retirement in release notes for The Sims 4: My Wedding Stories. The group, founded in 2014 according to the report, had become a prominent PC game release group. Its farewell was an announcement of retirement; the reporting does not describe a government seizure, arrest, or court-ordered shutdown as the cause. TorrentFreak’s February 24, 2022 report
Why did CODEX retire?
In the farewell reproduced by contemporary reporting, CODEX said its original goal had been to compete with RELOADED and that it felt the goal had been met. The group wrote: “So now, years after reaching our initial goal, we feel that it is time to move on.” That is the group’s stated explanation, not independent confirmation of its members’ private motives. TorrentFreak and Tech ARP’s account of the farewell reproduce or describe the statement.
How large was CODEX?
Contemporary publications reported different output totals, and neither provides a shared counting method that would reconcile them:

| Publisher | Reported figure | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| TorrentFreak (2022) | More than 7,000 | CODEX-branded titles released since the group’s inception |
| Tweakers (2022) | Approximately 12,600 | PC games across CODEX’s eight active years |
| Tweakers (2022) | Approximately 5,300 | Plaza releases; Plaza is described as a CODEX subgroup |
These counts should be kept attributed to their publishers, not added together or treated as equivalent measures. The reporting supports calling CODEX prolific; it does not establish a measured ranking against every other group. In particular, “largest” is not substantiated as a comparative ranking by these reports.
What made CODEX prominent?
TorrentFreak described CODEX releases across platforms including Steam, Denuvo, Origin, Epic, Uplay, Bethesda.net, and Battle.net. This is reported scope, not an independently audited catalog. Tweakers cited a same-day crack of Middle-earth: Shadow of War in 2017, a game that used Denuvo copy protection, as an example of the group’s visibility. Tweakers’ report

Tech ARP also reported that Daniel Vávra, Warhorse Studios director and co-founder, displayed a CODEX NFO poster at the studio. In a post dated January 8, 2020, quoted by Tech ARP, Vávra wrote: “Among posters with some classic old school games, we put this poster on a very special spot.” This is evidence of the group’s recognition in game-development circles, not a measure of its rank. The sources describe a retirement announcement and reproduce or report the group’s stated rationale.
