No. A Nintendo DSi does not natively play Game Boy Advance games, and a GBA ROM file does not bypass that incompatibility. Nintendo’s DSi Operations Manual states that the system is not compatible with Game Boy Advance titles. If you want to play original GBA cartridges on a Nintendo handheld, Nintendo documents the DS Lite as an alternative for single-player use.
Why a DSi cannot play GBA ROMs
Nintendo’s DSi Operations Manual says: “The Nintendo DSi system is not compatible with Game Boy Advance titles.” That applies to GBA games as a system-compatibility matter; a ROM is a digital game file, not a cartridge that adds GBA hardware support to the DSi.

Nintendo documents no officially supported way to run GBA ROM files on a DSi. The manual’s incompatibility statement does not establish that unofficial ROM-loading methods work, either. Compatibility through homebrew, flashcarts, or emulators—and the behavior of individual games—cannot be concluded from Nintendo’s documentation.
What about a DS Lite?
The DS Lite is a different console with a Game Boy Advance Game Pak slot. Nintendo says it can play GBA Game Paks in single-player mode; this is support for original cartridges, not a guarantee that ROM files will run.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo UK Support describes GBA play on the DS Lite as single-player only.
- Nintendo Americas Support lists GBA games among the games playable on DS and DS Lite in single-player mode.
- Nintendo’s original DS instruction manual also says the DS is compatible with GBA Game Paks in single-player mode.
Nintendo Support explains that DS and DS Lite lack the link cable port needed for legacy GBA multiplayer. The DS Lite is therefore a physical-cartridge alternative for single-player play, not an upgrade that makes a DSi run GBA games.
Do DS and DS Lite play older Game Boy games?
No. Nintendo says the DS and DS Lite cannot play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color games. Its compatibility explanation cites the lack of a link cable port and a special processor required for older software. GBA compatibility on DS-family hardware should not be generalized to every earlier Game Boy generation.
Rank #2
- The DS Lite system is a region free device, it can plays all Nintendo DS Lite games and Gameboy Advance Games
Which option fits your situation?
| Option | What Nintendo documents | Practical limit |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo DSi | Not compatible with GBA titles, according to the DSi Operations Manual. | No native GBA support; no official DSi ROM-running method is established by the cited documentation. |
| Nintendo DS Lite | Plays GBA Game Paks in single-player mode, according to Nintendo UK Support, Nintendo Americas Support, and the original DS manual. | Separate hardware; cited support is for cartridges, and GBA play is single-player only. |
If you already own a DSi, its official compatibility does not include GBA games. If you have original GBA cartridges and want to play them on a Nintendo handheld, the documented DS Lite option is limited to single-player. Neither point establishes that GBA ROM files will run on either system.
