Yes. You can trade Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon GO, but Niantic classifies every Shiny trade as a Special Trade—even when the recipient already has that Pokémon registered. Special Trades use more Stardust and count toward a limited daily allowance. For a normal trade, both Trainers must be level 10 or higher and physically together.
What to check before trading a Shiny
- Trainer level: Both players must be at least level 10.
- Friendship: You must be Good Friends to make a Special Trade. Friendship level also affects the Stardust cost.
- Daily Special Trade availability: Special Trades are limited per day. Niantic does not state a numerical allowance on its Trading Pokémon help page, so check the game before arranging a trade.
- Stardust: The trade screen shows the amount required before you confirm. There is no single cost that applies to every Shiny trade; the amount depends on the trade and your friendship level. See Niantic’s Friend List & Friendship Levels guidance.
- Location: For an ordinary trade, meet in person and use the in-game trading screen.
How to trade a Shiny in person
- Meet the other Trainer in person and make sure both accounts are level 10 or higher.
- Open your Trainer profile, go to Friends, and select the player you are meeting.
- Choose Trade and select the Shiny Pokémon you want to offer.
- Review the Stardust cost shown on the trade screen and confirm only if both players agree to the Pokémon and cost.
If either player cannot meet the requirements or lacks the displayed Stardust, the trade cannot be completed. A Shiny still counts as a Special Trade when the other player already owns that species.

Can you trade a Shiny remotely?
Yes, but only through Niantic’s Remote Trade feature. Players must become Forever Friends: the initial Remote Trade unlocks after 180 friendship points, and each subsequent Remote Trade requires another 90 friendship points. Remote Trades do not count as Special Trades, but they have their own eligibility rules and restrictions. For example, Pokémon caught within the last 30 days cannot be remotely traded. Check Niantic’s current Trading Remotely rules and the in-game trade screen before planning one.
| Trade type | Friendship requirement | Location | Limits and eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary in-person trade | Good Friends are required for Special Trades; friendship level can reduce Stardust costs. | Trainers must be physically together. | A Shiny is a Special Trade and counts toward the limited daily Special Trade allowance. |
| Remote Trade | Forever Friends; 180 friendship points unlock the first one, then 90 additional points for each later Remote Trade. | Can be completed remotely when the feature is available to both players. | Does not count as a Special Trade, but has separate restrictions; Pokémon caught in the last 30 days are ineligible. |
What happens to a Shiny after the trade?
A Pokémon can be traded only once. After the trade, the recipient keeps it; it cannot be returned to the original Trainer or traded onward. Mythical Pokémon such as Mew cannot be traded at all.

Does trading guarantee a Lucky Shiny?
No. A Shiny trade does not guarantee Lucky status. Lucky Friends are a separate mechanic: when Lucky Friends trade, both Pokémon in that trade become Lucky, and the status applies to their next trade. Niantic explains this in its Lucky Friends help page.
