If a large Xbox Game Pass install won’t fit, start with the console’s My Games & Apps > Manage > Free up space recommendations. Review the suggested add-ons, games, and duplicate installs before removing anything. Then uninstall games or optional components you no longer need, and set a different default install location if you have another storage device.
Use Xbox’s Free up space recommendations
On your console, open My Games & Apps > Manage > Free up space. Xbox says this screen can identify unused add-ons, games that can be shrunk, duplicate copies, and games you no longer have access to. Review each suggestion and remove only content you do not need; the dashboard wording may change with system updates. Xbox’s April 2025 update introduced this cleanup flow.
Uninstall games or optional components
Remove a game you no longer play
Uninstalling an installed game reclaims the space it occupies. You can reinstall it later if it is still available to your account. Before uninstalling, consider whether you want to keep any add-ons or other installed content associated with it.
Check for removable components
Some games let you remove selected components, such as content associated with a particular mode, but this depends on whether the developer supports it. Open the game’s manage-installation options to see what is available; do not assume every title lets you separate campaign, multiplayer, or other content.

#1 Best Overall
- EFFORTLESS XBOX INTEGRATION. Officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S consoles.
- ROOM FOR MORE GAMES. Up to 2TB(1) of storage gives you space to grow your library by up to 50(4) more games.
- NVME SPEED YOU CAN FEEL. Low-latency performance matches Xbox Velocity Architecture, so games play directly from the card.
- QUICK RESUME READY. Instantly switch between multiple suspended games without losing progress or waiting.
- XBOX GAME PASS ULTIMATE. Enjoy a 1-month trial with access to hundreds of games across console, PC, and cloud(2).
Do not delete save data as a routine way to make room for installs. Xbox’s cited cleanup guidance focuses on game installs and add-ons, not save deletion. A local-save cleanup feature described in an August 2026 Xbox Insider preview is not established here as a generally available console control.
Set where future games install
If you have another storage device connected, choose where new games and apps install by default: open the storage-device settings and select Change installation locations. Xbox documents separate default locations for games and apps, which can help keep the console’s built-in storage available for titles you want there. Menu labels can vary with system updates. See Xbox’s installation-location guidance.

Choose storage based on whether you need capacity or direct play
| Option | What it helps with | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free up space recommendations | Surfaces unused add-ons, shrinkable games, duplicates, and games you can no longer access for review. | Review suggestions before removing content; labels may change. Xbox, April 2025. |
| USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD | Stores games and can directly run Xbox One and backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games; useful for keeping or moving a library. | Do not treat ordinary USB storage as the direct-play solution for every Xbox Series X|S optimized game. Xbox storage overview; Xbox podcast discussion. |
| Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card | Adds storage and supports direct play, with performance designed to match the console’s internal storage; it can also be selected as a default install location. | Requires the console’s expansion-card slot. Current models, prices, and stock are not established here. Xbox storage overview. |
| Streaming an eligible game | Can avoid downloading and installing a supported game first. | Depends on membership, game eligibility, and current service conditions; it does not help with games that must be installed. Xbox, April 2025. |
For an Xbox Series X|S optimized game you want to launch directly, the documented performance-matched locations are internal storage and the Series X|S Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive can still hold games and serve as a place to move them, but it is not equivalent for direct play of every optimized title. Xbox’s storage explanation describes the expansion card’s role; its USB storage discussion covers the playability distinction.
Stream a game instead of installing it when eligible
Xbox’s April 2025 update said Game Pass Ultimate members could stream select games they own on Xbox consoles without downloading and installing first. Streaming can save local space for a supported game, but eligibility depends on the title and current service terms. It is not a substitute for installation when a game is unsupported for streaming.

Avoid guessing at game sizes or storage savings
Xbox’s cited official sources do not establish a typical Game Pass game size, a universal amount of usable console storage, or a typical amount recovered by cleanup. The space freed depends on the specific game and content removed, so check the console’s storage display rather than relying on a general estimate.
