If you want the closest match to Persona 4 Golden’s mix of character relationships, everyday activities and supernatural RPG storytelling, start with Persona 5 Royal. If the murder investigation matters more than the daily-life loop, try Danganronpa—but expect a very different kind of game.
What makes Persona 4 Golden distinctive?
Persona 4 Golden combines friendships and romance with supernatural themes and mysterious rumors. Its rural Inaba setting and serial-murder story give the relationships a mystery to unfold around, while Social Links make those bonds part of the game’s structure. ATLUS describes the game and its Social Links, and its Persona 4 Golden page frames it as a coming-of-age story.

That blend is why no single similarity label is enough. A useful alternative might share the routine of spending time with characters, the work of uncovering a hidden truth, or the contrast between warm everyday scenes and darker supernatural events. The best pick depends on which part you most want to keep.
Best matches, depending on what you liked
Persona 5 Royal: the closest fit for social routines and supernatural RPG storytelling
For the broadest carryover from Persona 4, choose Persona 5 Royal. ATLUS’s official description lists ordinary after-school options such as seeing friends, shopping, visiting a public bathhouse and taking part-time work, alongside the game’s larger RPG story. That makes it the strongest fit here if you want character time and daily activities to remain part of the experience. See ATLUS’s Persona 5 Royal overview.

#1 Best Overall
- The 5th numbered game in the series, created by renowned developers! The core development team of the recent Persona titles unites again for this upcoming game.
- A deep and engaging storyline - The thrilling story of a team of defiant teenagers, growing through every trial they face, begins now. Each case will take you one step closer to the truth veiled in darkness...What awaits our heroes: glory or ruin?
- Unique and interesting dungeons with various tricks and traps await - Overcome various obstacles with graceful Phantom Thief action. The simple-to-learn, but hard-to-master controls will be enjoyed by newcomers and veteran Persona players alike.
- Language - A stable of talented voice actors have provided English voice-overs while ATLUS’ celebrated localization team offers an English script that provides a faithful and engaging play experience.
It is a same-series recommendation, not a direct continuation of Persona 4’s story. Choose it for another Persona-style mix of social activities and supernatural RPG play, rather than expecting to return to Inaba or its cast.
Danganronpa: choose it for investigation and culprit deduction
If your favorite part of Persona 4 was following clues and working out who is responsible, Danganronpa is a strong contrast. Its official description centers on investigating cases and making arguments during class trials. The emphasis is on solving a mystery and confronting the people involved, rather than building a Persona-like daily schedule of social activities. The official Danganronpa site introduces its case-and-trial premise.

Pick it when you want the mystery to dominate. It is not a like-for-like social sim, and its investigation-and-trial structure is a different gameplay focus from Persona’s daily-life RPG loop.
Persona 3 Reload: a same-series possibility, with a narrower recommendation
Persona 3 Reload is another potential follow-up if you want to stay within the Persona series. It has appeared alongside Persona 5 Royal in a recent games-like-Persona editorial, but the available official details here do not support a close comparison of its social mechanics or mystery structure. Consider it as a same-series option, not a verified match for Persona 4’s particular blend.

Other names players suggest
In a discussion asking for games with the “same feeling as Persona,” players mentioned 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Metaphor: ReFantazio. Those are useful leads if you want to explore adjacent games, but a mention in a recommendation thread does not establish that any of them reproduces Persona 4’s murder mystery or daily social loop. The discussion is on Reddit’s JRPG community.

- Mystery centrality: Do you want the central story to revolve around murders, investigations or uncovering a larger hidden truth? Danganronpa is the clearest pick here for case investigation and culprit-focused trials.
- Daily social activity: Do you want regular choices about how to spend time with named characters? Persona 5 Royal is the clearest match among these recommendations, with several everyday after-school activities listed by ATLUS.
- Story and combat balance: Would you rather play an RPG that also makes room for relationships, or a mystery structured around investigation and trials? That distinction helps separate the Persona recommendation from Danganronpa.
- Tone: Is the appeal the contrast between friendship and ordinary routines on one hand, and supernatural or darker material on the other? Look for that combination specifically; sharing one feature does not guarantee the same overall mood.
What about Persona 4 Revival?
Persona 4 Revival is announced as a remake of Persona 4 Golden, so it may be the most direct way to revisit the same story in a new version. SEGA’s official page says physical copies are available only for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Check SEGA’s official site for current release and availability information. Because release status and retail listings can change, confirm that the game is currently available in your region before treating it as an immediately playable option.
Quick recommendation
Choose Persona 5 Royal for the strongest match to Persona 4’s social activities alongside supernatural RPG storytelling. Choose Danganronpa if what you want most is investigating cases and identifying culprits, and you are comfortable leaving the daily social-sim structure behind.
