Before launching a new shooter, check your PS5’s game presets, display compatibility, controller feel and accessibility options. Then set aim sensitivity, dead zones, aim assist and field of view inside the game itself: those controls vary by title, so there is no universal numeric setup that suits every shooter or player.
1. Review the PS5 game presets
Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. This page lets you choose defaults for games that offer the relevant options; Sony notes that some presets may not apply to every game.
- Performance or resolution mode: Performance mode is intended to make motion smoother, while resolution mode favors higher graphic quality. Pick the option the shooter supports and that fits your preference; the preset cannot add a mode the game does not offer.
- First-person view: Check the camera-view default if the game uses this setting.
- Other defaults: The page also includes third-person view, subtitles and audio, and online multiplayer session preferences.
Sony describes the choice this way: “Make motion in your game smoother with performance mode, or have higher graphic quality in resolution mode.” PlayStation Support: Customize game presets on PS5 consoles.
2. Match video output to your display
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and check the current output signal and the capabilities of the connected TV or monitor. Resolution, HDR, 120 Hz and VRR depend on compatible display hardware; 120 Hz and VRR also require support from the game.

- 120 Hz: When enabled, PS5 can output at 120 Hz for TVs and games that support a 120 Hz frame rate. It is not a guarantee that every game will run at 120 frames per second. If enabling 120 Hz causes output problems, turn it off.
- VRR: Variable refresh rate adjusts refresh rate in real time with compatible TVs and games. Sony notes that results vary by TV, so check how your own display behaves rather than assuming it will improve every setup.
- ALLM: Auto Low Latency Mode depends on display support. Sony notes that when VRR output is active, low-latency mode can remain active even if ALLM is set to Off.
Sony’s guidance for VRR is to “Allow the refresh rate to adjust in real time while using TVs and games that support VRR (variable refresh rate).” See PlayStation Support: How to change PS5 console resolution for output-setting details.
3. Choose a controller feel you can use consistently
Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) to adjust vibration intensity and trigger-effect intensity. Trigger effects work only in games that support them. Try your preference in the shooter itself: Sony documents the controls, but does not claim that a particular intensity improves aim or competitive performance.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
4. Check button assignments and accessibility
For system-level controller assignments, go to Settings > Accessibility > Controllers. Choose assignments that work for your hands and play style rather than copying a universal remap. Also inspect the game’s own accessibility menu, since available controls and features can differ by title.
PS5 accessibility options include text and display adjustments, as well as chat transcription. Game chat transcription is available only in supported games. See PlayStation Support: Accessibility settings on PS5 consoles.

5. Set shooter-specific controls in the game
Once you launch the game, open its settings and look for the options it actually provides. Sensitivity, dead zones, aim assist, field of view, audio and graphics controls are game-specific; the official PS5 documentation does not establish one-size-fits-all values for them.
- Find the game’s controller or gameplay menu and locate sensitivity and dead-zone settings.
- Check whether aim assist and field of view are configurable in that title.
- Review audio and graphics options, including any frame-rate mode the game offers.
- Change one setting at a time, then try it in a practice area or low-stakes match before adjusting further.
This approach helps you identify what each change does in that particular game without treating a console-wide preset as a substitute for in-game controls.
