How Much RAM, Storage, and Graphics Power Do You Need for a Gaming PC?

There is no one-size-fits-all gaming PC spec. Compare your target games’ RAM, GPU, VRAM, storage, and SSD requirements against the resolution and frame rate you want.

Choose gaming PC memory, storage, and graphics power based on the games you want to play and the resolution, frame rate, and settings you expect—not a single universal spec. For the examples covered here, 16 GB of system RAM is common, but one game recommends 32 GB for its 1440p/60 FPS high target. Storage requirements range from 85 GB to 160 GB for these individual games, and several require an SSD. GPU needs differ by game and target; a card’s VRAM capacity alone does not tell you how fast it will run a game.

Start with your games and performance target

Before selecting parts, write down the games you plan to play and the experience you want: resolution, frame rate, and graphics quality. A listing’s minimum and recommended specifications describe particular targets for that game; they are not a guarantee that every PC with the named parts will perform identically.

  1. List target games. Check each game’s current publisher or store listing rather than assuming one title represents an entire library.
  2. Set a target. Decide whether you want, for example, 1080p or 1440p, and what frame rate and quality settings matter to you.
  3. Compare the listed targets. Look at the game’s stated CPU and GPU examples, memory, storage, and drive requirements. The figures below show how much those targets can differ.
  4. Check the whole build. Confirm that the selected RAM works with the motherboard and CPU, and that the GPU fits the case and is supported by the power supply.

How much system RAM do you need for gaming?

Sixteen gigabytes is a common requirement among the cited games, but it is not a universal upper limit. FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, Rise of the Ronin, and Hogwarts Legacy list 16 GB for both minimum and recommended system memory. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 lists 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended for its stated high, 1440p/60 FPS target.

Use the requirement for your actual games and target as the baseline. If one of your games recommends more memory, account for that rather than treating another game’s 16 GB listing as a ceiling. Also verify that your chosen memory capacity is compatible with your motherboard and CPU.

System RAM is not GPU VRAM

System RAM is the computer’s main memory; VRAM is memory used by the graphics processor. AMD explains that a discrete graphics card has dedicated video memory, while integrated graphics use Unified Memory Architecture and share system memory. These capacities serve different roles, so a game’s system RAM requirement does not tell you how much VRAM a graphics card should have.

For integrated graphics, AMD recommends leaving the UMA frame-buffer setting on Auto for most workloads. Increasing a reserved buffer is not a substitute for having a discrete GPU with the performance a demanding game requires.

How much storage does a gaming PC need?

There is no single storage total that fits every gaming library. The cited individual game listings ask for 85 GB for Hogwarts Legacy, 155 GB for FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH and Rise of the Ronin, and 160 GB for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. These are per-game requirements, not a recommended capacity for an entire PC. Add the space for the games you intend to keep installed and leave room for updates and other files.

Drive type matters as well as capacity. FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, Rise of the Ronin, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 require an SSD; Rise of the Ronin recommends an NVMe SSD. Hogwarts Legacy prefers an SSD but supports an HDD. Check the current listing for each game you plan to play. These requirements do not establish that an SSD will increase frame rates.

What graphics card do you need for 1080p or 1440p gaming?

Choose a GPU by matching its performance to the target game, resolution, settings, and frame rate. Publisher requirements below name different cards for different targets; they are useful constraints, not a controlled comparison of those cards. The listed targets may also use different settings or upscaling, so do not read the table as a cross-game benchmark.

Game and stated target Minimum graphics examples Recommended graphics examples
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH: 1080p/30 FPS, low minimum; 1080p/60 FPS, medium recommended RX 6600, Intel Arc A580, or RTX 2060 RX 6700 XT or RTX 2070; the listing says 12 GB or more VRAM is recommended for 4K
Rise of the Ronin: 1080p/30 FPS, lowest settings, upscaled minimum; 1080p/60 FPS, standard settings, upscaled recommended GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 5500 XT 8 GB RTX 2080 Super 8 GB or RX 6700 XT 12 GB
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: low/1080p/30 FPS minimum; high/1440p/60 FPS recommended GTX 1060 6 GB, RX 580 8 GB, or Intel Arc A750 RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 4070, or RX 6800 XT
Hogwarts Legacy: 720p/30 FPS, low minimum; 1080p/60 FPS, high recommended GTX 960 4 GB or RX 470 4 GB GTX 1080 Ti, RX 5700 XT, or Intel Arc A770

These examples do not establish a universal graphics-card recommendation for 1080p or 1440p. In particular, do not compare cards by VRAM capacity alone: graphics performance and VRAM are separate considerations, and the listings do not supply a common benchmark that ranks the models against each other.

How to use VRAM examples

AMD’s graphics-card guidance gives Radeon examples of 8 GB for 1080p, 12 GB for 1440p, and 16–24 GB for 1440p/4K and 4K. Treat these as AMD’s product examples, not a rule for every card or game. AMD dates the underlying peak-usage test to June 28, 2023, and its Far Cry 6 comparison test to May 16, 2023; those dates matter when applying the figures to newer games or hardware.

What to verify before buying parts

  • Game target: Check the current listing for the resolution, frame rate, settings, and any use of upscaling tied to its requirements.
  • GPU fit: Compare the recommended GPU examples for your games, then check compatibility with your case and power supply. The specifications here do not provide a current cross-vendor benchmark or price-to-performance ranking.
  • Memory: Distinguish system RAM from GPU VRAM and check motherboard and CPU compatibility.
  • Storage: Total the space needed for your installed library rather than sizing a drive around one game; confirm whether each game requires an SSD.
  • Freshness: Requirements and hardware change. Recheck the current game listing and component compatibility when you are ready to buy.
