Bungie says the June 9, 2026 Monument of Triumph update was the game’s final planned live-service content update, but that Destiny 2 will remain playable. The studio also says it has begun work to restore vaulted campaigns, destinations, and raids, though it has not announced when that content might return.
Is Destiny 2 shutting down?
No shutdown has been announced. Bungie said in May 2026 that Destiny 2 would remain playable even as active development wound down, and its support guide says Monument of Triumph remains in the game indefinitely. That is different from promising regular new content: Bungie has ended planned live-service content updates.

The distinction matters: a game can remain accessible and supported for stability without receiving a continuing stream of major content releases. Bungie’s statement establishes its current plans, not a guarantee that service will continue forever.
What was the final Destiny 2 update?
On June 9, 2026, Bungie released Update 9.7.0, titled Monument of Triumph. The studio identifies it as the final planned live-service content update. Its May announcement described the change as a new direction for the studio, while saying the game would remain playable. Bungie’s May 21 announcement and the Monument of Triumph support guide set out the plan.

What Monument of Triumph added
Bungie lists Pantheon and Sparrow Racing League as permanent additions in the update. Some existing activities were reorganized: playlists were merged or deprecated, including legacy Vanguard and Crucible nodes, with activities moved into new hubs. The support guide describes access to destinations, activities, expansions, raids, and dungeons, subject to ownership requirements.
What it retired
The seasonal events Guardian Games, Solstice, Festival of the Lost, and The Dawning are being retired. So the final update does not mean every former Destiny 2 activity or event continues unchanged.

What support continues after the final content update?
Bungie’s support guide says the Destiny 2 API and official Companion App remain supported. It also allows for future hotfixes if needed for game health or stability. These are maintenance and service commitments, not a promise of new story missions, seasons, or expansions.
Bungie’s server and update status page listed maintenance and Update 9.7.0.4 activity in July 2026, after Monument of Triumph launched. That demonstrates continued service operations at that time; it should not be read as evidence that planned content updates resumed.

Is Bungie still making Destiny?
Bungie’s September 17, 2026 statement says Destiny remains foundational to the studio’s future and that work has begun to restore vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids. The studio called this restoration its first step, but gave no delivery schedule. Bungie’s statement on the next chapter says adapting older content to systems changed since Beyond Light—including lighting, encounters, and combatants—will take time.
This is an expressed intention to bring back vaulted content, not a dated roadmap, a promise of a particular campaign or raid, or confirmation of a new Destiny sequel. Bungie said it would share more details in coming months, but the statement itself does not specify when restoration will be available.

What “the end” means for Destiny 2
| What readers may mean | What Bungie has said |
|---|---|
| Planned content development | Update 9.7.0 on June 9, 2026 was the final planned live-service content update. |
| Game availability and service | Destiny 2 remains playable; possible health or stability hotfixes, API support, and Companion App support remain in place. |
| Destiny’s future | Bungie says the franchise is foundational to its future and restoration work on vaulted Destiny 2 content has begun, without a delivery schedule. |
Those are separate questions: the end of planned content updates is not the same thing as an announced shutdown, and a studio’s stated franchise plans do not guarantee a specific future release.
What is not established about Destiny 2’s decline
The cited Bungie announcements and support pages do not establish a player-count, revenue, or audience-retention figure. They document changes to planned content and service, not the game’s financial performance or the cause of Bungie’s decision. Claims that Destiny 2 is “dead,” or assertions about a specific decline, need evidence beyond these official statements.
