What to know before spending skill points
Pearl Abyss’s February 5, 2026 overview of combat and progression frames skills as part of a wider progression system involving weapons, chained abilities, and equipment upgrades. GameSpot’s March 19, 2026 early-skills guide says Abyss Artifacts can be spent on abilities, health, stamina, spirit, or equipment improvements. That makes an ability investment a trade-off: avoid neglecting survival stats just to fill out the skill tree.

Before using an Artifact, check for skills that can be learned by observing characters or events through the game’s “watch and learn” system. GameSpot also describes Faded Abyss Artifacts as a way to reset skill points. Its guide predates version 2.00.00, however, so use it for the specific recommendations below with the current-version changes in mind.
Pearl Abyss’s August 25, 2026 version 2.00.00 patch notes say the update improved skill learning, added Abyss Link, enabled individual skill-progression resets for each character, and introduced eight new Kliff skills that unlock after reaching a point in the main story. The notes also state that learning skills with Abyss Artifacts grants an equivalent number of Abyss Links to other playable characters. They do not identify the eight new skills in the cited patch-note section, so this guide does not guess at their names or rank them.

The 8 best early skills to consider
1. Keen Senses toward level 3: Dodge
GameSpot recommends investing in Keen Senses through level 3 to unlock Dodge, making this the list’s clearest defensive priority. If resources are tight, its guide suggests level 2 as a temporary stopping point rather than committing immediately to the full line. Think of this as a path to a useful move, not a single isolated unlock.
2. Swift Flight
Swift Flight increases mid-air glide speed, which can help you clear gaps and move through the world more efficiently, according to GameSpot. The trade-off is stamina consumption: faster gliding is useful only if you keep enough stamina for the rest of your traversal or a fight that follows.
3. Focused Insight
GameSpot says Focus level 3 unlocks Focused Insight, which lets you instantly parry an incoming melee attack while using Focus. It rewards awareness and timing rather than passive defense, and requires investment in Focus before the parry becomes available.

- Use darkness and cover to avoid being overwhelmed by the ship's deadly new inhabitants
- Seek out the weapon fabricators to increase your firepower as you journey deeper, into the dark and terrifying depths, but beware ammo is limited
- Gather materials & schematics for weapon upgrades and suit customizations with buffs
- Harvest DNA material to improve health, toughness and defensive capabilities.Survive an ever changing labyrinth. Each and every expedition into The Persistence will be disorienting and different.Death is just the beginning. Fatal encounters will result in Zimri's consciousness being uploaded into a new cloned body, ready to try again, with any upgraded stats, suits & weapon schematics kept to aid the next attempt to save the ship
4. Blinding Flash Finisher
Blinding Flash can stun enemies, creating an opening for heavy attacks. GameSpot recommends following the stun with those attacks, but presents this as a useful combat tactic—not a guaranteed solution for every enemy or encounter.

5. Nature’s Echo
At level 1, Nature’s Echo can repeat Forward Slash and add damage instances, according to GameSpot. It is a good candidate if you like building damage around that combo; players who favor other attacks need not treat it as mandatory.
6. Focused Force Palm
Focused Force Palm can break magical walls and open access to rewards. GameSpot describes an opportunity to learn it through observation at a story location, as well as a later route. Because the early opportunity may be missable and route details can reveal story context, check in-game observation opportunities as you progress rather than relying on a specific route from an older guide.

- Enter the stadium and take part of one of the biggest competitions across 34 sports: from swimming, soccer, extreme bike, weightlifting, trampoline and much more!
- Defend your own country and visit the World: United States, Australia, Japan, France…
- Train yourself alone or compete with your friends!
- An enhanced version of “30 Sport Games in 1”, with revamped design, new games and more customisation!
7. Force Current
Force Current is a utility pick, not a damage-first choice. GameSpot describes using it to destroy mineral deposits and trees, adjust objects, and push objects from a distance. Those interactions can make it valuable when exploration and gathering matter more to you than another direct combat skill.
8. Nature’s Snare
Nature’s Snare absorbs incoming projectiles and can return accumulated energy, according to GameSpot. The control input varies by control scheme, so check the skill’s current in-game prompt for your gamepad or mouse-and-keyboard setup rather than assuming one universal button sequence.

There is no controlled comparison in the cited guides that establishes a definitive best order or numerical ranking. A sensible starting sequence is Keen Senses toward Dodge and Swift Flight for defense and movement, followed by the combat skills that fit your approach. Add the exploration and utility options when their uses match what you are doing in the world.
- If survival is the priority: work toward Dodge before spending heavily on optional damage combos.
- If you spend a lot of time gliding: consider Swift Flight, while accounting for its greater stamina use.
- If you prefer melee control: Focused Insight and Blinding Flash Finisher offer parry and stun opportunities, respectively.
- If you build around Forward Slash: Nature’s Echo is the more directly relevant combo choice.
- If you explore or gather often: look for the observation opportunity for Focused Force Palm and consider Force Current’s environmental uses.
- If projectiles are a recurring problem: Nature’s Snare offers a defensive answer, subject to its control input on your setup.
A secondary guide updated August 31, 2026 and marked verified for version 2.00.00 also recommends Keen Senses level 3, Blinding Flash Finisher, and Nature’s Echo among its high-impact early choices. That provides current-version corroboration for those picks, but it does not make any build universally best.
