Crimson Desert’s controls were a real launch-era criticism, but the available evidence does not show that they will cause the game’s downfall. Pearl Abyss acknowledged player discomfort and released changes to responsiveness, remapping and evasion inputs, followed by fixes for specific control bugs. The latest notices available here show that work continued into September 2026, while also listing a remaining issue with remapped evasion. That establishes an ongoing problem-solving effort—not a demonstrated effect on sales or the game’s commercial future.

Why players criticized the controls

Launch-period reviews described the control scheme as cumbersome or unintuitive. PC Gamer’s reviewer reported perceived delays on some inputs and inconsistent results when dodging what appeared to be the same attack. Creative Bloq’s PS5 reviewer described spending the first hours wrestling with unnatural button combinations. These are individual review impressions, not controlled tests or proof that every player had the same experience.

Pearl Abyss acknowledged the criticism. In a statement reproduced by Push Square, the publisher said it knew many players had experienced discomfort with the controls, was preparing a patch, and apologized to keyboard-and-mouse players for not providing a satisfactory gameplay experience. The statement was attributed to Pearl Abyss, not to a named spokesperson.

What Pearl Abyss changed

The response arrived in stages rather than as one definitive redesign. The publisher’s patch notes show adjustments to input behavior, more configuration options and fixes for particular defects.

What the latest notices say about controls

The latest general patch located, version 2.03.02, was dated September 23, 2026. Its notes listed quest and progression fixes, not a general change to the control scheme. That does not establish that the controls were fully resolved; it only describes the changes listed in that hotfix. (Patch notes)

Pearl Abyss’s known-issues notice, last updated September 21, 2026, still listed a specific evasion problem: with Evasion Control set to Hold, the default Evasion key could continue to work after the player changed that key. The notice also listed situations in which interactions with NPCs, mounts or objects became unavailable. These are publisher-reported issues, not independent verification of how often they occur or of the current experience for all players. (Known issues)

Controller or keyboard and mouse: which setup is better?

The updates provide options, but the cited notices do not establish one universally best setup. A controller offers the customization and alternate evasion behaviors added in version 1.04.00; keyboard-and-mouse players also received expanded key binding customization. Which feels more natural depends on the player and the actions they use most.

Controller Version 1.04.00 added controller customization and an option to switch roll and evasion inputs. The sources do not identify a best layout for every player.
Keyboard and mouse Version 1.04.00 expanded key binding customization; Pearl Abyss had apologized for the launch experience for this input method. The sources do not establish that remapping eliminates every control concern.
Hold evasion Version 1.04.00 added Hold as an alternative to the original press/double-click behavior. The September 21 known-issues notice listed a case where the default Evasion key could remain active after remapping while Hold was selected.
Original evasion behavior The April notes describe the original press/double-click behavior as an alternative to Hold. The sources do not establish that it is preferable for all players.

Could the controls cause Crimson Desert’s downfall?

That remains a prediction, not a conclusion supported by the evidence here. The reviews document criticism, and Pearl Abyss’s response confirms that the publisher took control discomfort seriously. Patch notes then record concrete changes and fixes. But none of these sources measures how common dissatisfaction was, whether it changed sales, or whether it will determine the game’s long-term prospects.

The more defensible conclusion is narrower: controls were a prominent launch concern, and the publisher addressed them iteratively. The September 2026 notices show both additional fixes and a remaining documented evasion issue. Patch notes can establish what Pearl Abyss says it changed or knows about; they cannot establish that every player now finds the controls comfortable.
