Bungie’s two 2025 Open Access events have ended. They let players temporarily play specified paid content; they did not grant permanent licenses to the expansions. Bungie’s current Available Content guide distinguishes free content from paid expansions and other offerings.
What “free for a limited time” meant
The headline refers to temporary access events Bungie held in 2025, not an offer that is active now. During an Open Access period, players could play the included content without buying it for the duration of the event. Bungie also said players could keep certain rewards earned during those periods. That did not mean participants permanently acquired licenses for the paid content.

The two 2025 Open Access events
| Event | Dates and cutoff | Content included | Platforms or storefronts named by Bungie |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expansion Open Access, announced July 3, 2025 | July 8 through July 22, 2025. The three then-current Episodes were included only through July 15. | All then-currently available expansions; the three then-current Episodes through their earlier cutoff. | PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Microsoft Store, and Epic Games Store. |
| Open Access Week, announced November 26, 2025 | December 2, 2025, at 9 AM PT through December 9, 2025, at 9:59 AM PT. | Then-current expansions, raids, dungeons, and content packs. | Steam, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store for Xbox and PC, and Epic Games Store. |
The dates and content differed: the July event had a separate, earlier cutoff for Episodes, while the December event specifically included raids, dungeons, and content packs. Neither event is still running.
Could players keep the DLC after the events?
No permanent expansion licenses were promised in the announcements. Bungie described temporary access to play and said players could keep rewards earned during the events. For the July event, those rewards included currencies, gear, Titles, Triumphs, and cosmetics; Bungie also said rewards earned during December’s Open Access Week would remain with players. Keeping those items or progress rewards is not the same as keeping access to paid expansion content after the event ends.

What Destiny 2 content is free now?
Bungie Help’s Available Content: Expansions, Seasons, and More guide describes a mix of free and paid content. It lists the Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaign story content among content available to all players. Later campaigns—including The Witch Queen, Lightfall, The Final Shape, The Edge of Fate, and Renegades—are listed as paid campaigns, with introductory missions available free. The guide also separates paid Dungeon Keys and content packs from free content and activities.
So “all DLC is free” is not an accurate description of the current access model. The answer depends on the specific campaign, pack, key, or activity, and on whether your account has the relevant entitlement on its platform. Check Bungie’s live Available Content guide for the current catalog and use the relevant platform storefront to acquire paid content; the catalog can change.

How to check access to a specific expansion
- Identify the content. Check whether you mean a campaign, Dungeon Key, content pack, raid, or another activity; these categories do not all have the same access terms.
- Consult Bungie’s Available Content guide. Look for the named item and whether Bungie lists it as free or paid. The guide also notes when only an introductory mission is free.
- Check the storefront for the platform you play on. Bungie’s guide directs players to storefronts for paid content. Confirm the item is available to your account there rather than assuming that event access created a permanent entitlement.
Sources and date context
The historical event terms above come from Bungie’s This Week In Destiny – 07/03/2025 and This Week in Destiny – 11/26/2025. The present-day free-versus-paid distinction is based on Bungie Help’s Available Content: Expansions, Seasons, and More, checked against the October 8, 2026 context. Because the catalog may change, consult that live guide for a specific purchase or access question.
