Destiny 2: The Final Shape is the expansion that sends the Guardian into the Traveler to confront the Witness. Its main draws are a saga-closing campaign, the Pale Heart destination, the Prismatic subclass, three new class Supers and the Salvation’s Edge raid. It launched on June 4, 2024; as of October 8, 2026, Bungie says planned live-service updates have ended, though stability hotfixes may still be released.
What is The Final Shape?
The Final Shape is a Destiny 2 expansion built around the conflict with the Witness. The Guardian and Vanguard enter the Traveler to stop the Witness from imposing its version of the Final Shape on reality. Bungie framed the story as the culmination of Destiny’s first ten years. Its new destination, the Pale Heart, is a landscape inside the Traveler that changes as the story unfolds. Bungie’s expansion page describes the threat as “a nightmarish calcification of reality into the Witness’s twisted design.”
What does the expansion add?
Prismatic and new Supers
Prismatic lets Guardians combine selected abilities from Light and Darkness subclasses. Bungie describes its available elements as Arc, Solar, Void, Stasis and Strand. Using both Light and Darkness powers charges Transcendence, which grants a unique grenade. The expansion also adds a new Super and associated Aspect for each class: Storm’s Edge for Hunters, Song of Flame for Warlocks and Twilight Arsenal for Titans. These are substantial new options for building a character, but the feature descriptions alone do not establish how strong or balanced any particular build is.
Bungie also introduced Exotic class items with combinations of two Exotic armor perks. The combination mechanic offers another way to shape a build, though it should not be mistaken for every possible pairing of Exotic effects. Bungie’s Prismatic overview calls it a way to combine the five listed elements into a custom subclass.

The Pale Heart, Pathfinder and Overthrow
The Pale Heart first opens along the campaign’s route, then reveals more locations, challenges and activities. After completing the campaign, players can progress Pale Heart ranks. Overthrow is a destination activity, while Pathfinder provides progression for both Pale Heart and ritual activities. The destination is therefore more than a campaign backdrop: its post-campaign systems give players activities to pursue there. Bungie’s guide to the expansion outlines these destination features.
The Dread and Salvation’s Edge
The Dread are a new enemy species associated with the Witness’s incursion into the Traveler. For coordinated groups, the expansion’s new raid is Salvation’s Edge, which Bungie announced for June 7, 2024. The raid gives the expansion a high-end group activity alongside its campaign and destination content; Bungie’s launch guide identifies it as the new raid, but that announcement does not establish how difficult or rewarding it feels in practice. How does the campaign handle difficulty?
Players can choose the standard Be Brave setting or the harder Become Legend Legendary setting. Bungie recommends Legendary for experienced players with a broad arsenal. Completing every Legendary campaign mission provides additional rewards per class, according to the official guide. That makes Legendary a clear option for players who want a greater challenge and an incentive beyond simply finishing the story. The guide does not establish that it is the right starting point for every player, especially those still building their arsenal.
What was the expansion’s post-launch content plan?
At launch, Bungie positioned Episodes as the next format for Destiny storytelling and content updates, planning Echoes, Revenant and Heresy for The Final Shape year. Echoes began on June 11, 2024, one week after the expansion launched. That is launch-era context, not a guarantee of what content is currently accessible or included with a purchase; check the current in-game and platform listings for present ownership and access terms. Is Destiny 2 still getting updates?
As of October 8, 2026, Bungie’s official support position is that planned live-service content updates ended with Update 9.7.0, released June 9, 2026. Bungie identified Monument of Triumph, released that day, as the last live-service update. This does not mean the studio has ruled out all future patches: Bungie says a stability hotfix may still be needed. Its support page states, “While we are not planning new updates to Destiny 2, we may need to release a hotfix in the future for the health and stability of the game.” Bungie’s support guide also says content available in Update 9.5.6.3 and additions in Update 9.7.0 would be available on and after June 9. That depends on what you want from Destiny 2. The expansion’s clearest appeal is its combination of a campaign centered on the Witness, a new destination, new combat and build options, and a raid for groups. Legendary difficulty offers a harder campaign path with additional rewards for completing every mission on that setting. Players primarily looking for an ongoing stream of planned live-service updates should weigh Bungie’s 2026 announcement: that planned cadence has ended, even though stability hotfixes remain possible.
