Bungie ended those updates with Update 9.7.0 on June 9, 2026, while allowing for possible stability hotfixes. Whether the game is worth starting now depends on what you want: a shooter with a large back catalogue and accessible entry points, or a continuously expanding live-service game.
What Destiny 2 reviews can—and cannot—tell you
“Destiny reviews” can mean reviews of the original game, Destiny 2, or individual expansions. Those are not interchangeable judgments: each release adds or changes campaigns, activities, and systems, while the long-running service has changed over time. A review of one expansion is not a verdict on every part of the series or on the game’s current state.

GameSpot’s review index illustrates that variation: it scores The Edge of Fate 6/10, The Final Shape 9/10, and Lightfall 7/10. Those are GameSpot’s scores for those releases, not an aggregate across publications or a current player rating. For a useful review, look for the release and content evaluated, and consider campaign quality, activities and replayability, shooter gameplay, multiplayer, and the service outlook separately. Is Destiny 2 still active, and what changed in 2026?
Destiny 2 has not shut down. Bungie announced on May 21, 2026 that the June update would be its final planned live-service content update. Update 9.7.0 launched June 9; Bungie says content available through Update 9.5.6.3 plus the 9.7.0 additions remains available. Bungie may still release hotfixes for game health and stability, but that is different from a commitment to regular new content. Read Bungie’s Update 9.7.0 support guide.

Bungie’s May announcement said, “Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today.” This describes Bungie’s stated plan, not independent proof of future service uptime. Read the May 21 announcement.
Vaulted content may return, but there is no announced date
On September 17, 2026, Bungie said work had begun to bring vaulted campaigns, destinations, and raids back. It said the work requires changes to lighting, encounters, combatants, and underlying systems, and promised more details as work progresses. The announcement did not give a return date, so do not buy on the assumption that a particular vaulted activity will be available soon. Read Bungie’s update on the next chapter.

What can you play for free?
Bungie’s available-content guide describes a substantial free entry point, but free access is not the same as access to every campaign or endgame activity. Depending on the activity and ownership requirements, free players can:
- Install the game and play the New Light questline.
- Visit destinations and take part in patrols, public events, and lost sectors.
- Play the story campaigns for Shadowkeep and Beyond Light.
- Try introductory missions for paid campaigns.
- Access selected raids, a dungeon, Crucible (excluding Trials), Gambit, Dares of Eternity, and time-limited seasonal events.
- Use several of the game’s systems and play permanent additions in the Monument of Triumph update, including Pantheon and Sparrow Racing League.
Availability varies by activity and ownership. Bungie’s support guide says some raid and dungeon access requires the corresponding expansion or Dungeon Key. Check the official guide for the current activity-by-activity rules before planning around a specific activity. What requires a purchase?
Campaigns and associated activities are tied to paid expansions; some dungeons require a Dungeon Key. Bungie lists The Witch Queen, Lightfall, The Final Shape, The Edge of Fate, and Renegades in its Destiny 2: The Collection section. The guide says all Dungeon Keys are included with the Collection, while also noting that some Light and Darkness Saga content is not currently available. Collection contents can also be acquired separately through a player’s storefront.
Before purchasing, compare the exact contents and current price on your platform’s storefront. Bundle availability and contents can change, and the official guide does not establish a universal price. Bungie’s expansion page lists the Collection and earlier packs. Check Bungie’s current expansion listing.

Who should start or return now?
It may suit you if…
- You want to sample the shooting, activities, and some campaign content before spending money.
- You are comfortable choosing from content that remains available rather than expecting a steady flow of planned updates.
- You want to focus on a specific expansion or activity and are willing to check its current access requirements first.
Think twice if…
- Your main reason to play is the expectation of regular new campaigns or seasonal updates; Bungie says planned live-service content updates have ended.
- You expect every past campaign, destination, raid, or dungeon to be available. Some content is unavailable, and Bungie has not dated the restoration work it announced.
- You want one purchase to unlock everything without checking details. Access depends on the expansion, Dungeon Key, activity, platform, and current availability.
Is there a physical Destiny lore book?
Destiny Grimoire Anthology Volume IV: The Royal Will is an optional hardcover lore companion, not a required game guide or purchase. GameSpot identified it as an Amazon listing in 2021, which does not establish current stock, seller, edition, or price. Bungie describes the Grimoire Anthology as a collectible lore compendium; its Volume II product page describes physical-book details and an in-game emblem code for that physical edition.
