Yuzu’s Android performance jump came from Native Code Execution (NCE), which let compatible Nintendo Switch ARM64 code run directly on a compatible ARM64 Android device instead of translating every CPU instruction at runtime. That can remove a major emulation bottleneck, but it is not a universal frame-rate boost: the game, phone, drivers, and cooling all matter. Yuzu’s official development and distribution ended on March 4, 2024.
What changed in Yuzu’s Android update?
The December 22, 2023 performance report focused on Native Code Execution, or NCE. The Nintendo Switch and modern Android phones both use ARM-family CPUs. In a conventional just-in-time (JIT) path, an emulator translates guest CPU instructions into instructions the phone can execute. NCE instead allows compatible Switch ARM64 code to execute natively on the ARM64 host, cutting out much of that CPU-side translation work. HotHardware’s original report described the resulting improvement as substantial.
| CPU path | What happens | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| JIT recompilation | Switch CPU instructions are translated into host instructions, generally during runtime. | Translation takes processing time and can constrain performance. |
| NCE | Compatible ARM64 guest code executes directly on the ARM64 Android CPU. | The emulator still has to reproduce the Switch environment, including graphics and memory behavior. |
“Native” describes this CPU execution path, not the whole emulator. Switch graphics still have to be emulated and passed through an Android graphics backend such as Vulkan or OpenGL. Shader compilation, GPU drivers, memory bandwidth, game-specific bugs, and Android background activity can all remain bottlenecks.
Why NCE did not boost every game equally
The NCE path described in the contemporary coverage depended on a compatible 39-bit address-space configuration. Games using an incompatible configuration could fall back to JIT, so a game’s age alone does not determine whether it benefits. Some older titles used a deprecated 36-bit target. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reportedly became compatible with 39-bit addressing through a later game update, but that does not mean every older title received a similar update. Yuzu’s release/change record documents the related memory-address changes.

- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
There is no dependable universal FPS multiplier. Results depended on the phone’s SoC, Android version, GPU driver, game, Yuzu build, resolution scale, NCE eligibility, and temperature. Contemporary examples of games reaching or exceeding 60 FPS were demonstrations on particular hardware and builds—not a promise for all titles. A high average FPS also does not guarantee smooth frame pacing, correct graphics, stable audio, or freedom from crashes.
What Android hardware benefits?
The Android implementation requires a 64-bit ARM device, and NCE also depends on the host and memory layout supporting the relevant execution path. High-end Snapdragon phones were strong candidates in contemporary emulation testing, but a processor label alone cannot establish compatibility or performance. GPU-driver quality, available memory, and sustained thermal behavior matter too.

Enjoy effortless control and play Fortnite, Call of Duty, Roblox, Genshin Impact, and many more anytime, anywhere. Note: Controller only works with games that support controller input, and does not support PS Remote Play
- 5M-Cycle Lifespan & Zero Drift: MC1 mobile gaming controller features a Hall-effect joystick with a 5M cycle lifespan, 2.5x longer than standard carbon-film sticks. Its innovative electromagnetic induction technology ensures drift-free operation, enabling precise character control in intense games and significantly extending this phone game controller durability
- Ergonomic Grip Design: The handle is ergonomically shaped with a l*ser-engraved texture for anti-slip and enhanced grip, effectively reducing fatigue during long gaming sessions. The scientifically designed joystick and button layout ensures smooth operation. Whether for personal use or as a gift, it delivers a more comfortable and healthier gaming experience
- 7-Color RGB Light Ring & 600mAh Battery: The mobile game controller features a 7-color adjustable light ring on the joystick(ABXY button lights can be turned off, but their colors are not adjustable). The lighting is vibrant yet eye-friendly. The built-in 600mAh battery provides up to 6 hours of battery life in brightness mode — enough for a full day of gaming
- CPU: Strong single-core performance helps demanding emulation workloads.
- GPU and drivers: Stable graphics support matters because NCE does not remove GPU emulation.
- Cooling: A phone may start fast and slow down as it heats up.
- Game and build: Compatibility is title- and version-specific; a newer phone does not guarantee a particular game will run well.
Buying a new phone solely for Yuzu is difficult to justify now that the project is discontinued. No specific phone can be called universally best without controlled tests covering the exact game, build, driver, and sustained use.
How to enable NCE in a historical Android build
These directions apply to a historical or legally obtained archived Yuzu Android build that exposes the option; they are not a current official support route. The archived Android update notes placed the setting at Advanced Settings > Debug > CPU Backend.

- Open Yuzu on Android and go to Settings > Advanced Settings > Debug.
- Open CPU Backend and select NCE, if that option is available.
- Launch a compatible game and check the FPS overlay or performance indicator for the active CPU path, if the build provides one. Ineligible games may fall back to JIT.
- If the game crashes or becomes unstable, return to CPU Backend and choose JIT. For other problems, restore the default graphics driver, reduce resolution scaling, and clear or rebuild shader caches only if the build offers that function.
- Compare the same game section and settings after several minutes of play. A short run may not reveal thermal throttling, and average FPS alone will not show every frame-time hitch.
If the NCE option is missing, the build may predate the feature, be a different fork, or place the setting elsewhere. A slow game does not by itself mean NCE is broken: it may be using JIT, be GPU- or shader-limited, or be throttling. A black screen or broken effects point toward the graphics backend or driver as possible causes; an unofficial build’s authenticity cannot be assumed from its download page.
What NCE cannot fix
- Graphics accuracy: NCE targets CPU execution, not visual quality. Resolution scale, graphics backend, drivers, shaders, and game-specific fixes have more direct influence.
- Shader stutter: Compilation hitches can persist even when CPU translation overhead is reduced.
- GPU limits and emulation bugs: Switch-specific graphics and system behavior still have to be reproduced.
- Heat and sustained performance: Reduced CPU work may lower heat in some scenarios, but that is not guaranteed; thermal throttling can erase an early performance advantage.
- Frame pacing: A high FPS counter can coexist with uneven delivery or stutters.
Yuzu’s status and safe use
Yuzu is no longer an actively supported official Android emulator. After Nintendo sued Yuzu developer Tropic Haze in February 2024, the parties settled on March 4, 2024. Tropic Haze agreed to pay Nintendo $2.4 million and cease Yuzu development and distribution. The original project’s official downloads and support ended; an unofficial mirror or successor project should not be mistaken for an official Yuzu release. See Android Authority’s settlement coverage, Nintendo Wire’s report on the cessation terms, and the GitHub DMCA record.
